Seventh Grade English
English 7
(a required one-year
course)
This literature-based
program is designed to
further develop the
students’ reading
strategies: questioning,
predicting, inferring,
clarifying, summarizing,
and evaluating. Students
read several novels in
addition to short
stories, non-fiction,
and informational
selections. We
concentrate on the basic
reading comprehension
skills: main idea,
details, sequence,
cause/effect,
fact/opinion, inference,
and point of view.
Seventh grade includes
an intense introduction
to academic research. A
collaborative unit with
the St. Margaret’s
librarians focuses on
accessing quality
information and
evaluating resources.
Extensive time is also
spent on the instruction
and practice of the
essential traits of a
good writer: ideas,
organization, voice,
word choice, sentence
fluency, conventions
(grammar), and
presentation. Students
further refine their
writing skills by
following the
step-by-step process for
developing essays of
various types.
