Because this time of the year we focus much of our attention on the admissions process, dozens of prospective students and their parents have been visiting the school, both to be interviewed and assessed by as well as to question and evaluate us. Both sides are looking for the "right fit."
In speaking with these families, we find ourselves trying to express accurately just what it is that makes St. Margaret's such an extraordinary school. What do we value? What are our best offerings? Why should a family choose our school over another private school or their local public school? The answers often lie with the observers.
The beautiful facility is usually the first thing about which guest comment. We are fortunate to have a school with such expansive and well-maintained buildings and grounds. The attractive classrooms suggest teachers who spend the extra time and effort to provide a stimulating, well-ordered educational setting for the children.
Our visitors also are impressed with the comprehensive, varied program throughout the school. From the enrichment or special subject classes and wonderful projects, activities, and trips that enhance the Lower School program to the academic offerings, it's clear that we have a full menu, well-prepared meat and potatoes through to delectable desserts. Prospective families are keenly aware of the school's aim to provide well for the academic, artistic, athletic, social, and spiritual and moral needs of our students.
Additionally, our guests remind us of the great benefit of sharing the campus with excellent role models, our Upper School students. The children watch the older Tartans grow in wisdom and talent, excelling as gifted musicians, artists, thespians, skilled and disciplined athletes, and hardworking, focused older scholars, who are on their way to becoming leaders in the world and accomplishing bright, beautiful dreams. Visitors are aware also that these young adults are not just intent on realizing their own shining destinies but also are dedicated to giving back through their ardent commitment to community service.
The feature that is most often noted, however, is a simple, abstract one - the atmosphere of the campus. Guests almost always refer to a friendly, happy spirit that they sense in the children, the faculty and staff, and the parents. They often report a vibrant energy combined with a calm orderliness that they don't often notice in other schools. In my heart, I know that this pervasive, positive atmosphere exists because we are a school whose main priority is providing an unusually excellent environment for the children, who are thriving in an atmosphere where parents and teachers work in concert to help our students "grow in wisdom, stature, and favor with God," addressing individual needs and strengths, encouraging budding talents and interests, introducing possibilities - ever working toward the strengthening of individual potential, and opening young eyes to the importance of respect and responsibility toward others, the community, and the world. Lofty words, I know, but nonetheless that's what I have seen through the eyes who observe us from the outside.
