Game Notes:
In blistering hot temperatures of 112° and 40 knot winds Tain Lee birdied three of his last six holes to finish at level par 71 and finish 5th in the CIF-SS Individual Championship. Tain will advance to the SCGA Southern California Golf Championship at the SCGA Members Course in Murrieta on Thursday 29 May. The top six individuals at that championship will advance to the State Finals at the Santa Maria Country Club on 3 June. Boys Golf vs. Southern Individual Regional
Game Notes:
Five golfers from the Academy league, including three Tartans, played at the CIF-SS Individual Sectional qualifier yesterday at Seacliffs Country Club in Huntington Beach. On a very blustery and cool day, only one golfer advanced to the CIF-SS Individual Final in Palm Springs on 19 May. Tain Lee of SMES shot a 3 over par round of 75 to tie for 19th and advanced to the individual finals. Both Grant Reindl and Spencer Kushner tied for 44th by carding rounds of 78. Corey Bacon from Oxford Academy tied for 57th with an 80 and Sang Choi from Sage Hill finished 87th with a round of 90. This marks the second consecutive year Tain has qualified for the Individual Finals and fourth time a SMES Male Golfer has qualified for the Individual Championship. Tyler Smith was the first male to qualified for the Individual Finals in 2003. He and Matt Pierce also qualified in 2004- where Matt tied for the Individual Championship losing in a playoff. Both golfers that year advanced to the SCGA Championship. The venue for this year’s Individual Championship will be at the Mission Lakes Country Club in Palm Spring. This par 71 course is 6700 yards in length and is known for challenging greens and windy conditions. Approximately 90 of the top CIF-SS Golfers who survived yesterdays multiple qualifiers will compete for this year’s championship. In addition to crowning a CIF-SS Individual champion, the top 22 golfers will advance to the SCGA championship at the Members Course on Thursday 29 May 2008 in Murrieta. -

Track&Field vs. CIF PrelimsMcgraw and Matsushita heading to CIF Finals
Game Notes:
The Tartan boys and girls track teams battled against some of So Cal's top track athletes at the Division IV prelims at Carpintaria High School. For the girls it was Jane McGraw putting together another tenacious performance, as she finished 7th in the pole vault and earned a spot in the Division 4 CIF Finals. Her 8 ft vault ties her own personal record , and is the 2nd highest in school history. Tasha Pavlovich also had an impressive performance in the 2 mile race, beating her previous top mark by 15 seconds. She is now the 4th fastest 2 mile runner in school history. As for the boys, Tak Matsushita jumped an amazing 21 ft in the long jump, giving him a spot in next weeks CIF Final for Division IV . Tak's 21 ft jump ranks 2nd all time in Tartan track history.

Game Notes:
Oriana Poindexter won two individual titles, Cristina Poindexter was 15th in her 500 free and the Medley and 400 Free Relays both scored to put the Tartans in the top-15 in their first three years of existence. Oriana battled two time defending champion Danielle Arad in the 500 freestyle before pulling away in the last 100 to win in an All-American qualifying time (and school record) of 5:03. 20 minutes later she was at it again, overtaking three swimmers in the last lap to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.9 (also an All America time). Finally, 6 minutes later, a gassed but battling Oriana brought the 4x100 Free Relay home in 4:00 for 15th place. Cristina, Hannah Hg, and Alex Moyzis were also on this relay whose 3:57 prelim time was the 3rd fastest in school history. All four splits from the girls were lifetime bests. The 200 Medley Relay of Hannah, Oriana, Kristie Austin and Cristina finished 1/2 a second ahead of their prelim swim in 11th, beating Whitney's Academy League champion relay. In addition to her 500 free swim, Cristina was 19th racing to a lifetime best in her 200 IM and Hannah, weakened by a virus swam a strong 1:08.9 for 20th in the 100 back. Finally, our 4x50 free relay of Alex, Kristie, Irene Tung and Katie Skeith swam to the 3rd fastest time of the season and the fastest time we have EVER swam at the CIF Championships. Thanks for a great season Tartans.

Swimming&Diving vs. Academy League FinalsBoys: Whitney: 179, Sage 171.5, Oxford 122.5, SMES 37
Game Notes:
A huge learning curve was passed today. The very thin and very young Tartan boys swim team competed extremely well in the very deep Academy League Championships. Not waiting for the "studs" in 7th and 8th grade to help them, William Sammons, Jeff Carpenter, Ryan Limb, Chris Gay, Nick Tsutsui and Greg Wu showed that they can compete today! Jeff led the way with a 3rd place in the 100 back and 4th in the 50 free. Greg dropped 7 seconds and moved up two spots to take 4th in the 200 IM, William grabbed an 8th in the 100 back, and Ryan recoved from losing his goggles on the start to take 8th in the 50 free. The relays were where they team showed their stuff. The 200 Medley Relay of Jeff, Chris, Greg, and Ryan dropped 3 seconds to finish 6th. The 4x50 free relay swam to a strong 6th with William, Chris, Nick and Greg all swimming lifetime best splits. They saved the best for last with the 4x100 free relay. Ryan led off in a ltb 57.5, Nick and Will swam ltb to keep us in the fight and Jeff uncorked a 53.8 (three seconds faster than his best) to move us to 5th and only 8 seconds off of CIF qualifying. The relay swam to our 3rd fastest time in school history and for perspective, SMES alumnus and Olympic Qualifier, Paul Zaich was on the faster two relays. Most impressive for this group is that if not for a few mistakes in prelims, they could have scored 50 points in this meet. With Paul last year, we scored only 21 more (71). With depth coming and experience provided by this group, the near future of the SMES boys swim program is expected to be very strong. Guys, thank you for your effort, your work ethic, your humor and your leadership.

Swimming&Diving vs. Academy League Prelims & FinalsGirls: SMES 155, Whitney 154, Sage 111, Oxford 90
Game Notes:
It came down to one event. The 4x100 free relay would determine the Academy League Champions for the girls. If the Tartans "A" relay beats Whitney and the "B" relay placed at least 6th, the Tartans win their first team title. It wasn't close. The Tartans "A" AND "B" relays were ahead of Whitney for 250 yards, before finishing one spot ahead (by 15 seconds) and only one behind (2nd and 4th) to steal the win. One single point was all that separated these two teams at the end. Every single Tartan girl scored in finals and the story lines were everywhere: Oriana Poindexter and Cristina Poindexter each won two events and set meet records. The also were on the victorious, record setting 200 free relay swimming stunning split times. Hannah Ng swam a huge 50 free coming from behind to take second and a gutsy 100 back (3rd) 5 minutes after the CIF-qualifying/meet record setting relay swim. An exhausted Kristie Austin swam four events in 50 minutes placing in all and qualifying for CIF on the 200 free relay. For the second time in a week, Chelsea Connon swam the toughest double around: 200 free (8th) and 500 free (5th). Lifetime best splits were turned in at the perfect time by Jenna Berman, Katie Lanni, Katie Skeith (3 swims), Allie Davis (4 swims), and Michelle Adler (2 swims) Kelsey Bleiweiss finished 4th in the 200 free, came back to take 6th in the 100 breast and 4 minutes later had to swim a 100 free on the 4x100 relay that took second. Alex Moyzis and Irene Tung swam lifetime bests in the 100 free to keep us in the meet when we needed help. And in perhaps the most impressive, heads-up, meet turning performance of the day was accomplished by Marni Thomas. As the 1st alternate in the 100 free, she was standing at the blocks ready and warmed up when a swimmer failed to show. She got up, dropped 3 SECONDS from her best time and finished 7th...that is a 2-point swim in a 1-point victory. Oriana was named the meet's Outstanding Swimmer for her two individual wins, one relay win and second relay runner-up. The most complete team in school history is not done yet. Oriana, Sylvia Zaich (injured), Cristina, Hannah, Alex, Irene, Katie Skeith, and Kristie Austin are headed to the CIF Championships this Tuesday aiming for a top-8 team finish.
