The greatest vollyball player in the game’s history has another accolade to put on his mantleplace: U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame member.
San Clemente’s Karch Kiraly, with three Olympic gold medals, more career victories, prize money and awards than any other beach volleyball player was voted into the Olympic Hall of Fame last month, the hall announced Tuesday.
Kiraly will be part of a stellar group inducted June 19 in Chicago. Kiraly was selected along with boxer Oscar De La Hoya, ice skater Brian Boitano, former Dream Team member and NBA superstar David Robinson, marathoner Joan Benoit Samuelson, swimmer Amy Van Dyken and the 1996 women’s gymnastics team.
Kiraly’s almost 30-year career ended last season.He currently coaches the St. Margaret’s school volleyball team in San Juan Capistrano and runs the Kiraly Academy. He also began the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball last summer.
“We at the AVP could not be prouder of Karch,” said Leonard Armato, commissioner and CEO of the AVP Crocs Tour. “Karch has been a great ambassador for the sport of beach volleyball and he deeply deserves this honor. He truly represents the spirit of the Olympic Movement.”

O.C.'s top athletes honored at banquet
It was an amazing collection of athletes that gathered Tuesday night for the annual Register and OCVarsity.com awards banquet.
The event, held at the Marconi Automotive Museum in Tustin, brought together the stars who shined the brightest in the county in 2007-08 by winning the top honor in their sport. The top coaches were also honored.
The night's highlight was the announcement of the Register's Athletes of the Year: Orange Lutheran's Blake Ayles (top boys athlete), Woodbridge's Christine Babcock (top girls athlete) and St. Margaret's Hunter Steffien (top small schools athlete).
Lauren Ciccomascolo received Lacrosse Athlete of the Year and Coach Crabtree was honored as Lacosse Coach of the Year.
Volleyball legend and St. Margaret's Boys Volleyball coach, Karch Kiraly, was the guest speaker and helped hand out the awards.
