Introduction

The expressions of thoughts and feelings take many forms. Verbal and written language represents only one form that communicates these expressions. Music, dance, theatre, and the visual arts expand verbal and non-verbal communication skills and encourage the exploration of intuitive and emotional forms of self-expression.

The Arts provide a humanizing influence and create a balance in our curriculum which helps with the development of the whole person. Skill development is emphasized across the fine arts spectrum so that students can be effective in expressing their ideas. Our programs and classes also place an emphasis on learning to be creative problem-solvers. Research has shown that students who study the arts are also more likely to display originality and creativity in other subjects.

Performing Arts

Theatre at St. Margaret's explores a wide range of theatrical areas including acting, production, theatre history and functions. Through performance, classroom discussion, and individual projects, students expand their imaginations, strengthen their communicative skills, and gain an appreciation of the theatre as a living art form.

Music courses are designed to widen the range of the musician by the introduction and enhancement of performance skills that allow the performer to achieve a level of comfort while performing. Theory, ear training, site singing, writing/reading, and instrument positioning are all used to bring students to this performance level. Students are expected to perform on assigned occasions.

Dance introduces the basic technical skill of various dance forms including, but not limited to ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, Pilates and lyrical jazz. Students increase their coordination, concentration, flexibility, strength, postural alignment, self discipline, musicality and appreciation for dance as a live art form. Safe use of the body is emphasized in order to prevent injuries and to assure a life-long ability to enjoy dance. Basic dance vocabulary and history are also taught. Students are required to perform at scheduled concerts. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to audition their own choreography.

Visual Arts

We view the visual arts as a form of communication, self-reflection, and expression. As our students grow and develop, it is our goal to offer experiences that allow our students to be fully involved in the process of art making through the exploration of a large variety of media and methods. We are also concerned with developing visual literacy as our students learn about art elements and principles, cultural heritage, art history and aesthetic valuing. Essential components in our visual arts curriculum are developing creative thinking and technical skills. Curriculum planning in the visual arts also supports and enhances the school wide curriculum.
