Volunteer
The volunteer services
provided by St.
Margaret’s parents,
faculty, and staff are
enormously important to
the operation of our
school. Our PTF
volunteer programs
improve the quality of
school life for our
children. No amount of
volunteer time is too
small (or too large)!

ARTS ALLIANCE
Chairs: Kelly Collier
To stimulate the minds and the imaginations of our children, to
broaden their cultural horizons and extend their understanding of the
world, the Arts Alliance channels volunteer and financial support
into enriching and expanding the school's visual and performing arts
programs. Students from Preschool through Upper School benefit from
enhanced programs in the areas of dance, theatre, vocal and
instrumental music, and visual arts both as participants and as
audience members. In addition to being an appreciative audience,
parents provide encouragement and assistance as requested by the
program directors.
BOOSTER CLUB
Chair: Theresa Murray
The Booster Club supports SMES physical development and athletic
programs at St. Margaret’s, benefiting students from Preschool
through Upper School. The Booster Club sells food, beverages and
snacks and a variety of great merchandise at games and provides the
nucleus for parental involvement and support of the many sports teams
and activities for SMES students of all ages. The Lower School’s
Tartan Trot (jog-a-thon), held every spring, is one of the unique
events. Whether they are players or enthusiastic spectators, SMES
students greet athletic events with spirit; parental involvement adds
a level of support for the creation of an on-going healthy, active
lifestyle.
LUNCH PROGRAM
Chair: Katie Smith
PTF parent volunteers work together to ensure that the students at
St. Margaret’s are offered a healthy, nutritious lunch every day in a
safe, friendly, and clean environment. The variety of volunteers
encompasses on-site management, director, and aide positions, and
offers parents a way to be involved for a day, a week, or a year.
FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
Chair: Brigid Landau
Assistant Chair: Deb Lake
The Friends of the Library sponsors two on-campus events during the
year: the Scholastic Book Fair and the Used Book Sale. They also
organize library volunteers and the Birthday Book Club, a SMES
tradition that offers parents the opportunity to provide funds for a
book purchased for the
St. Margaret’s Library in honor of the child’s birthday. A bookplate
bears the child’s name. Funds may also be donated in honor of other
occasions and to honor a special teacher, relative or friend. The
aim, very simply, is to continue to increase the depth and breadth of
the library’s reach, so that our students have the world of learning
and exploration at their fingertips.
HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM
Chair: Robyn Brenens
Red Ribbon Week - October 23-27, 2006 A nationally recognized and celebrated
event that has become a national symbol of drug prevention. Special events are
organized throughout this week to raise student awareness of drug prevention. In
addition, the committee works with the administration and the school nurses to
support programs that educate students on health and safety issues. Everything
from personal safety to bicycle safety, from adolescent issues to disaster
preparedness, is presented in an informative and open way, so our children can
face the world and its challenges with more confidence.
SASS PROGRAM
(Shop and Support SMES)
Chair: Carolyn Stephens
Do you buy groceries? Clothes? Books? Fast food? We’re betting you do…
and your shopping can help your school! Sass is effortless fundraising
—nothing could be easier. Get your feet wet by registering your
preference for SMES with your local grocery store. Then, every time
you swipe your affinity card, the store sets aside money for SMES.
Venture further afield with eScrip. You (and your family members
throughout the United States) can register simply by visiting
www.escrip.com. Use the SMES Group ID: 138054429. Prompts at the site
will walk you through the procedure—register your ATM/debit card,
credit cards and some grocery loyalty cards. Whenever you use one of
those cards at the many merchants who participate in the eScrip
program, the merchant donates a percentage of your purchase to St.
Margaret’s! No extra spending is required, no conditions are placed
on your purchases, and it is a secure site. There's even an on-line
tracking service available to you, so you can see exactly how much
your regular shopping rounds are earning for the school.
Electronic
Scrip Incorporated (ESI), a California-based
corporation, introduced eScrip in 1999 and have distributed over $120
million to schools and youth organizations across the country.
Keep
on marching with other secure sites including the excellent and well-
respected SchoolPop at www.schoolpop.com, among others. Details of
the SaSS program will be available at division and grade specific
welcoming events throughout the fall.
PARENT EDUCATION PROGRAM
Chair: Tricia Raymund
Parent Education’s goal is to help equip parents for understanding
our children’s behavior, peer pressure, and other issues faced every
family. Parent Education Programs are provided on two levels.
On the
first level, several Parent Education Forums throughout the year
bring respected speakers on relevant issues to facilitate open
discussion.
On the second level, in 1999 SMES Parent Education formed
a parent consortium of seven local independent schools. Called
Parents In Action, our mission is to present one nationally sought-
after speaker per year. The location of the presentation rotates
among the: SMES, Harbor Day, Pegasus, St. John’s Episcopal, Mariners,
St. Anne, and St. Mary and All Angels. |
