 | Girls' Soccer Begins Summer Program | The girls' varsity and junior varsity soccer teams have begun their summer workouts and we are eager to meet the challenges of a new season as we prepare to defend our Academy League title and pursue a CIF Championship! We meet every Monday through Thursday from 4:00-5:30 pm on the Highland Hall Field. We especially want to encourage all new players to come out and meet the girls on the pitch! If you have any questions, please contact Coach Marmelstein @ 661-0108 ext. 329 or email him at johnny.marmelstein@smes.org. Go Tartans! | Upper School Athletics | | V Girls Soccer | Winter | | Competing with the Attitude of a Champion | <br>Four Tartans came to the CIF Finals and had the kind of attitude that leads to success. In each of their cases, they weren't content at just being there, but they wanted to make a statement that they were key factors not only this year, but for the next couple years as well. All four athletes have a lot to be proud of and certainly put a wonderful cap on amazing seasons.<br><br>Adrienne Baker <br>300 Hurdles <br>47.62 6th Place<br>Personal Record<br>#1 Freshman in CIF Div. 4<br>**Adrienne got out like a cannon and was in great position over the 3rd and 4th hurdles. Because she had given every ounce of effort in the early going, she was flying through the 6th hurdle. In the final stretch run, you could see the determination in her face. After clearing the 8th hurdle in stride and pushing towards the finish line, Adrienne had run the kind of race that established her as the #2 300 meter hurdler in our school’s history and the top freshman 300 meter hurdler in our division of C.I.F. “Run happy!”<br><br>Johnny Quinn <br>Pole Vault <br>13-3 3rd Place<br>Personal Record<br>#1 Sophomore in CIF Div. 4<br>**Johnny looked like a top notch vaulter throughout the entire competition. Clearing each height on his 1st attempt, he put himself in great position to win any tiebreakers. At 13-3, his firs attempt was successful and looked terrific. At 13-9, he made a great attempt and can certainly set his sights high next year. Johnny’s 3rd place finish is quite impressive since the two ahead of him were seniors.<br><br>Desmond Smith <br>800 meters<br>2:01.67 7th Place<br>Personal Record<br>School Record<br>#1 Sophomore in CIF Div. 4<br>**Desmond ran one terrific race. He hit his 400 in 56 (as planned). At this point, he was in 8th to 9th. Then, he pushed the back stretch, ran the curve hard, and was really making a move towards those ahead of him. He wasn’t intimidated to say the least. Down the final stretch, he passed a couple runners and was moving quickly towards a couple more. Had the race been 810 meters, Desmond was making the kind of move that would have put him still a few more places higher. <br><br>Randy Rense <br>High Jump<br>**Randy’s qualification of 6-0 put him in a top notch competition. Without a doubt, he is a CIF Finals type athlete who has earned some nice accolades this year. Though he didn’t clear the opening height, Randy led the boys team in many ways and is a cornerstone of this team. Randy will be back next year at this meet and it will probably be in multiple events.<br><br> | Upper School Athletics | | Track&Field | spring | | Girls Swimming 3rd at CIF; Boys 15th! | In what was a tremendous inaugural season, the boys and girls swim teams once again saved their best for last. Competing against the best at the CIF Division IV Championships at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach this week, the girls flexed their muscles and tangled with the "big boys" coming away with a hard earned 3rd place team finish. The boys, on the broad shoulders of Paul Zaich, took 15th (out of 42) for their 2nd highest finish and highest point total ever.<br><br>The Tartans started off the meet on the right foot when the 4th seeded 200 Medley Relay of Erin Boeckman (33.7), Sylvia Zaich (32.0), Jamison Gee (28.5), and Oriana Poindexter (25.8) roared back from 7th place to take home 3rd in a school record 2:00.20. Next up, the boys notched their 5th consecutive school record swim in taking 12th (seeded 13th) in the Medley with a 1:51.88. Paul (26.7) and Ronney Tay (lifetime best 31.3) got us out to a early lead, Michael Wong (LTB, 28.6) held on, and Kyle Kermott (25.2)blazed home to give us our fastest time of the season and a quick 10 points.<br><br>In the Individual Medley's (IM's), we again lit up the pool. Oriana and Sylvia were seeded 2nd and 5th respectively and things initially went according to plan. Sylvia was out fast with the leaders while Oriana seemingly lied in wait at the back of the field. Someone forgot to tell Oriana that she was too far back to matter: she came home in the last 50 more than 1/2 second faster than ANYONE and finished 3rd in a school record 2:13.90. Sylvia touched at 2:15.70 for 6th and like that, the Tartans had 39 points! <br><br>Paul was ranked #1 going into the final and he made it stick. Swimming with the next three seeds for a 100, he made the turn to the breaststroke and put the hammer down. He swam away from the field with a win, our first individual CIF title since John Blaney in 1990, a school record, and an All America qualifying time (top-30 swimmers in the nation) of 1:56.49. <br><br>In the 50 and 100 freestyles, senior Jamison Gee proved why she is such a fierce competitor and someone who will prove invaluable to replace. When asthma issues in prelims <br>limited her effectiveness and seeded her 11th and 13th, she didn't complain. With a quick trip to the doctor for an inhaler and a new focus, she ripped off a win in consols of the 50 (9th, 26.08) and just missed her own school record in the 100 finishing 10th in 57.41. Critical to the success of a swim meet is how you come back and swim the finals. Jamison was the only Tartan to move up in both events giving us 6 additional points and a lot of momentum.<br><br>Our diving points from Tuesday's meet were added next and Brieana Marticorena's 5th and Liberty Kikerpill's 9th gave us a critical 23 for the meet. Not bad for two girls who learned to dive two months ago!<br><br>The boys and girls 200 Free Relays were next. For the boys, Paul, Ronney, Michael, and Kyle had a heartbreaker finishing 17th (first alternate) in a school record time of 1:39.28. Michael had a lifetime best split (again!) The girls relay of Kelly Barrett, Brieana Marticorena, Liberty Kikerpill, and Kendall Hacche, swam an incredible race with each girl setting a lifetime best split and the relay finishing with the 3rd best SMES time of the season. <br><br>In the breaststrokes, Sylvia, Oriana, and Paul again dropped the hammer on the competition. Sylvia and Oriana came out of prelims seeded 1st and 3rd and the team at this point needed a 1-2 sweep to have any chance at a third place team finish. They didn't disappoint. As in the IM, Sylvia went with the leaders and Oriana sat back, 4th at the 50. Over the last 25 both put on mad dashes, Sylvia took the lead in the last 15 yards while Oriana moved to second and they held on. Sylvia's 1:06.95 was a school record and an All America qualifying swim and Oriana's 1:07.43 was a lifetime best, and missed All America by 1/10th of a second. Importantly, the Tartans were now two points in front for the battle for 3rd place. <br><br>Second seeded Paul took on Manual Sanchez from Los Altos and it was clear from the start that no one else mattered. They left the field behind and Paul chased Sanchez for 100 yards coming up a mere 7/10's of a second short, 57.33-58.02. Paul scored another school and personal best (by over a second!) while gaining his second All America swim. <br><br>The final event was the girls 400 Free Relay and the 4th seeded team of Oriana, Erin, Jamison and Sylvia needed to either beat or stay one place behind Oaks Christian to tie for third. Only 10 minutes after their epic 100 breaststroke, Oriana (57.89) put the Tartans solidly into 4th with a great leadoff. Erin jammed her turn but bravely held on (1:04.1), and it was up to the senior. Jamison took off in her final race, and mowed down two teams putting us into 6th only two spots behind Oaks. Sylvia had an epic anchor (56.1) passed one team and we finished 5th with Oaks in fourth...until the results were announced. Oaks had dq'd and St. Margaret's took 3rd place alone with an astounding 167 points. Quartz Hill won with 215 and La Reina had 200. Defending champion Carpinteria finished in fourth with 147.<br><br>Of the 11 swims that qualified for finals, we either equaled or moved up spots in all but one. Of the 11, we equaled improved our time in every one. That is how good teams win and that is what the St. Margaret's Tartans did in this meet putting them quickly on the map of teams to be careful of in the future. | Upper School Athletics | | Swimming&Diving | Spring | | Swimmers Shine at Inagural Academy League Meet | In the first ever meeting of Academy League teams, the Tartans battled much deeper Sage Hill and Oxford to the end last Saturday at Capo Valley. Individual swims were the name of the game for St. Margaret's. First and foremost, Kyle Kermott (50 free-24.40), Erin Boeckman (50 free-27.70) qualified for the CIF Championships as the last remaing swimmers expected to do so bringing the total to 12 qualifiers in 31 events!<br><br>Paul Zaich (100 free-49.15; 200 IM-1:58.85) blew away the field in winning two events and now heads into CIF as the favorite in the IM and one of two in the 100 breaststroke. Impressively, for the season, Paul has lost ONE race in twelve tries and qualified for CIF in 7 of a possible 8 events. <br><br>Oriana Poindexter (100 free-57.63; 100 Breast-1:08.12) won two as well and also heads to CIF with a tremendous amount of momentum (and top six seedings) in the breaststroke and IM. Both times were lifetime bests. <br><br>Sylvia Zaich won the 200 IM and completed a 1-2 sweep of the Breaststrokes by chasing Oriana to a 1:09.15 finish. She, too is seeded in the top-6 at CIF in both events. Jamison Gee was runner-up in both the 50 and 100 freestyles and Oriana, Sylvia, Jamison, and Erin Boeckman blazed the 200 Free Relay setting a blazing school record (and a top 10 CIF seed) at 1:49.40. Kelly Barrett replaced Oriana on the anchor of the 200 Medley Relay and the result was still same as always: a win and a fast time (2:05.4).<br><br>Ronney Tay won the 100 breaststroke in a lifetime best, CIF qualifying 1:09.42 and finished 4th in the 50 free. Lifetime bests were also turned in by Kendall Hacche (50 free), Hallie Mayer (50 free), Nicole Sollberger (50 back, 50 free relay split), Brieana Marticorena (50 fly), and Kyle Kermott (100 free-57.3). | Upper School Athletics | | Swimming&Diving | Spring | | Divers Finish 2nd at CIF | After picking up the sport only two months ago, Junior Brieana Marticorena and Senior Liberty Kikerpill completed an amazing season finishing 5th and 9th respectively at the CIF Division IV Diving Championships today. Their point total of 21 points squeaked by La Mirada and Los Altos (20 each) and Futures (17). Bonita HS won the meet with 48 points and four divers, three of whom Brieana finished ahead of. This point total is now added to the Swimming Championships beginning tomorrow where the girls are currently seeded 4th in CIF. | Upper School Athletics | | Swimming&Diving | Spring | | TARTAN TENNIS | Boy Varsity tennis lost to Sage Hill but not without a fight. Only one black eye. Outstand play came from singles players Mark Adams and Kenton Murray and the doubles team of Michael Limb and Tommy Chung who won one set and upset SH's sweep.<br><br> | Upper School Athletics | | Boys Tennis | Spring | | Divers Take To The Boards | Two members of our Diving Team competed at the Sunset League Diving Invitational today and moved closer to their goals of qualifying for the CIF Division IV Swimming and Diving Championships. Senior Liberty Kikerpill and junior Brieana Marticorena competed against Division I and II powers, Esperanza, Long Beach Wilson, Los Alamitos, Marina, Huntington Beach, Edison, and Fountain Valley (among others) in their first diving meet ever. Brieana's 6-dive preliminary round score is more than half way to the CIF qualifying standard of 200 points. Liberty is right behind her and each has four more meets between now and CIF to reach that score. Diving points count as an individual event at the CIF Championships and the Tartans have a chance to get two divers into the Finals (top-8) at the meet in May. | Upper School Athletics | | Swimming&Diving | Spring | | Boy's Basketball All CIF Selections | Div. 4A All CIF<br>Paul Janczyk 1st Team<br>Nic Benedetto 2nd Team | Upper School Athletics | | V Boys Basketball | Winter | | Zaich's Among County's Top Swimmers | In the annual mid-season ranking of top times for all CIF Divisions, siblings Paul and Sylvia Zaich are among the leaders in their 100 Breaststroke's. Sylvia is the #5 ranked girl with her school record 1:08.53 and is in the top #15 with her 200 Individual Medley. Paul, on the strength of a 59.42 swum at the first meet is the #2 ranked breaststroker in all of Orange County, only 1/100th behind the leader. <br><br>CIF Championships for all divisions are May 12-14 at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, CA. | Upper School Athletics | | Swimming&Diving | Spring | | Tartans Break Up Oxford Pitcher's Perfect Season | Today the Tartans faced the #1 pitcher in the Academy League, senior Melissa Porche. Last week she was the Orange County softball player of the week for all divisions of OC. She earned that honor last week as she struck out 47 batters during the week including pitching a 1-0 shutout of the 4th-ranked *Division I* team - Los Alamitos. She had pitched 14 games and had not given up any earned runs. ... until the first inning against the Tartans! Senior Kristin Petersen led the game off with a clean single up the middle. Three batters later, with two outs and Kristin still on first, up came Stevie Fry. As Stevie approached the plate, the opposing coach yelled "Big Stick ... back up". They backed up. Not far enough! Stevie jumped on a 1-1 fastball and jacked it over the centerfielders head for a clean double that broke up Melissa Porche's perfect season! <br><br>Yes, Oxford went on to win in six innings, but as all competitors know - not all victories are on the scoreboard. Way to go Tartans! | Upper School Athletics | | Softball | Spring | | Swimmers Make 6 More CIF Cuts | In their last meet against Division I competition, the Tartan swimmers had a very successful outing against Capo Valley and El Toro High Schools yesterday. Swimming at nearly full strength for the first time after an unusually high amount of injuries and illnesses, the girls secured four more CIF qualifying swims and the boys two bringing our total to 10 swimmers qualified in 22 events.<br><br>Swimming "off"events and displaying their versatility, Sylvia Zaich (100 Butterfly - 1:05.9, 200 Free - 2:07.5), Oriana Poindexter (500 Free - 5:25.2), and Paul Zaich (200 Free - 1:52.0, 500 Free - 5:02.8), each qualified for CIF. Paul's 500 was the fastest at the meet, while the other four swims were each good for runner-up positions against the Cougars and Chargers. <br><br>The Tartans finally got to show some depth on the girls side with three Medley and three Free Relays competing. The "A" 200 Medley (Erin Boeckmann, Sylvia, Jamison Gee, Oriana) again qualified for CIF and lowered their school record another 2.4 seconds. The "B" of Liberty Kikerpill, Katie Lanni, Alex Gangolli, and Hallie Mayer and "C" of Nicole Sollberger, Kendall Hacche, Brieana Marticorena, and Novelle Shakeel also swam very well setting season best times. Our "A" 200 Free Relay of Sylvia, Jamison, Oriana, and Kelly Barrett, also lowered their school record by nearly a second in finishing second in 1:52.89.<br><br>For the guys, the Medley and Free Relays of Paul, Ronney Tay, Michael Wong, and Lucas Johnson had strong showings against the DI teams. Ronney had strong 50 Free and a great 100 Breaststroke, while Michael went a lifetime best in his 50 Free. Lucas' first high school meet started slowly, but his leg on the Free Relay was a strong one for the Tartans. <br><br>Next Wednesday, April 7, the Tartan Diving Team of Liberty, Brieana, and Nicole head up to Fountain Valley HS for our first meet of the season as they attempt to qualify to further bolster our team's efforts at CIF (swimming and diving points are combined at CIF.)<br><br>The Tartan swimmers are now off until April 20 when they travel to Chadwick for a meet against the Dolphins and Pasadena Poly. At that time, we expect to have back Kyle Kermott, Nick Troop, and Alex Trimble from varying ailments as we aim towards our Academy League Invitational at Capo Valley on 5/1 and CIF on 5/12-13. | Upper School Athletics | | Swimming&Diving | Spring | | Swimming Takes On The Big Boys! | Members of the Tartan swim team traveled up the freeway to the high profile Mission Viejo Invitational on Saturday. Competing against predominantely Division I schools from the San Diego, Southern, North Coast and Sac-Joaquin Sections, the Tartans again proved more than capable. Leading the charge of three more CIF Division IV CIF cuts, and four more school records was Paul Zaich. Arriving to the pool a mere 10 minutes before is prelim heat of the 100 breaststroke after taking SAT's at school, all he did was go out and post the fastest time (1:01.25) in the morning heats. The other competitors must have wished that the SAT's were taken in another state, because with ample time to rest and prepare for the finals, Paul simply took it to the entire field from the gun. Winning by a body length in 59.66, no competitor was under 1:00 and Paul's time was 2/100ths off his previous SMES best (59.64) and again places him in the top 30 in the nation! <br><br>Another strong effort was turned in by our girls relays. With Jamison Gee, Kelly Barrett, Sylvia Zaich, and Oriana Poindexter swimming both the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays, the Tartans turned in their best performances of the season. In the 200, with amazing splits from each swimmer, they finished with one of the top times in all of CIF Division IV at 1:50.35. Coming back only 30 minutes later, they bested the SMES record in the 400 by 13 seconds and qualified for CIF in a quick 4:07.86 for 12th place. Leading off that relay, Oriana swam to a CIF qualifying 58.58 for her 100 Freestyle. Her 2:21.93 in the prelims of the 200 IM was a CIF qualifying time. <br><br>Sylvia turned in season best and school record times in the 200 IM (2:17.35; 10th place) and 100 Breaststroke (1:08.53; 4th place) and Jamison finished 10th in the 50 Free in 26.35p. Ronney Tay rounded out the swimming with a lifetime best and new school record in the 50 Freestyle (25.55) and another strong effort in his 100 Breaststroke.<br><br>The Tartans next meet is Thursday, April 1 at Capistrano Valley HS. The Rebels scored on their first play from scrimmage, but then were shutout the rest of the evening by the tough Tartan defense. The Tartans were led by defensive tackle David Milburn who was constantly disrupting the Rebels’ backfield all night long. Andy Morrison and Matt Furman were solid as the Tartan linebackers and Scott Edgcomb and Ryan Brunswick added interceptions to help the defensive effort. Brendan Downes sealed the victory for the Tartans by recovering a Flintridge fumble in the end zone. Offensively, the line did an excellent job of opening holes for Mack Mower who rushed for 67 yards in 11 carries and one touchdown. Andy Morrison added 52 yards on 8 carries and also had a touchdown. Sebastian Bacon threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 40 yards. Ryan Brunswick and Scott Edgcomb each had a touchdown reception and Steve Hart led all receivers with two receptions for 82 yards. With their victory the Tartans are now ranked number four in Division X111, their highest ranking since beginning 11-man football in 1995.
| | | V Football | Fall | | Volleyball Has Awesome Weekend | After a tough loss last week the Tartan girls volleyball team decided to kick it up a notch. The team played in the Orange County Championship tournament. This tournament consisted of the top teams in the area as well as a few from northern California and San Diego. Pool play was on Friday and Saturday morning and playoffs continued on Saturday afternoon. The Tartans were placed in a pool with El Dorado, Murrieta Valley, and cross town rival Laguna Beach. The tournament began with a match against Division II AA seventh ranked team El Dorado. The Tartans started off strong and got great play out of all their starters. Courtney Kent led the team with 6 kills and Callan Smith had 5. Leslie Wiekamp paced the Tartans with 3 aces and 6 digs. Jaclyn Mason also had a good match recording 2 aces, 1 kill, 2 blocks, 6 digs, and 15 assists. The Tartans won 25-23, 25-23. The second match against Laguna Beach was filled with plenty of emotion. Courtney Kent and the Tartans were determined to win this match. Courtney had an ace, 9 digs and 14 kills to lead the Tartans. Jena Brion also added great hitting and defense. She finished the match with 9 kills and 12 digs. Great play from Katie Skeith was also a determining factor in the 20-25, 25-22, 15-11 win. Saturday morning began with Division I fourth ranked powerhouse Murrieta Valley. The Tartans were determined to finish their pool play undefeated, and they did. The match was a tough battle but the Tartans never gave up. Courtney Kent had 14 kills, 2 aces and 8 digs. Danielle Graham had 3 kills and an awesome 6 blocks. The scores of the match were 25-21, 23-25, 15-10. The first round of playoffs set up a rematch from last year against Harvard Westlake. Last year the Tartans lost to Harvard Westlake but this year it would be different. The Tartans were down one player and the team looked to Junior Katie McComb to fill those shoes. Katie did an outstanding job in her first ever start. Katie had 3 aces, 4 kills, and 7 digs in the win. The Tartans also looked for a boost from middle blocker Callan Smith. Callan had her best match of the tournament tallying 8 kills and 7 blocks. Great serving and defense from team captains Laura Canright and Leslie Wiekamp were also detrimental in the victory. After an ace by Laura the Tartans finally prevailed 17-25, 25-17, 20-18. The first and only loss of the tournament sent the Tartans packing. Immediately after the match against Harvard Westlake the Tartans had to face a very anxious and tough team from Los Gatos. The Tartans started off strong with a 9-2 lead but Los Gatos was just too strong. With the playoffs being single elimination the tournament finished there. The scores were 13-25, 13-25. The Tartans are very optimistic after an awesome weekend. They are hoping to take this momentum and turn it into an outstanding season. Go Tartans!
| | | V Girls Volleyball | | | Tartans now ranked #2 in CIF Polls | The Tartans continued to roll Friday night as they put on an offensive show against Calvary Chapel of Downey. Mack Mower rushed for 211 yards on just 11 carries and scored a touchdown. Sebastian Bacon completed 8 of 11 passes for 215 yards and 4 touchdowns. What was most impressive was that every pass went to a different receiver! John Van der Wall started things off with a 63 yard touchdown reception on the second offensive play of the game. Hugh Hutchinson and J.P. Sutro added touchdown receptions of 27 and 25 yards respectively. Ryan Brunswick added to the scoring with a 3 yard PAT reception. Defensively, the Tartans gave up some yardage and time possession, but they were very tough when it counted. The Tartans limited the Grizzlies to 14 points before a late touchdown gave Calvary Chapel their final points. Andy Morrison led all tacklers and he received help from Matt Furman, David Milburn and Scott Edgcomb. The Tartans take on Sherman Indian Saturday night at home.
| | | V Football | | | Football Team Remains Undefeated | The Tartans remained undefeated, running their record to 3-0 with a 54-0 victory against Sherman Indian of Riverside. The Tartan offense was led by sophomore Michael Duenes who gained 153 yards on 13 carries. Michael also set the school record for the longest run from scrimmage when he scampered 96 yards in the fourth quarter. Mack Mower kept up his consistent rushing, contributing 101 yards on 10 carries before retiring for the night early in the third quarter. Sebastian Bacon continued his accurate passing by completing 13 of 18 passes and connecting with John Van der Wall, Evan Guerrero, Michael Duenes, and Steven Hart for touchdowns. Bacon was given plenty of time to throw thanks to the great offensive line play of Tyler Demorest, Brendan Downes, Joey Kelly, Joseph Lydon, Chase Heger, Johnny Quinn, Chris Yokota, Alex Miyawaki, and Geoff Wilson Defensively, the Tartans stifled the Sherman running attack and limited the Indians to just 6 net rushing yards for the game. Michael Martin turned in a fine game at defensive back and David Milburn creating problems for Sherman from his defensive tackle position.
| | | V Football | | | Tartan defeat Sage Hill to remain atop the Golden West League. | The Tartans defeated Sage Hill on Thursday 30 September 2004 at Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course 238-251. Both teams going into the match were undefeated in league play. Although Sage Hill had the low golfer with a 37, Piper Miller countered with a 38 of her own. Moreover Ashlynn Gilmore contributed a 43 in helping SMES to remain undefeated in league play.Justine Li, Senior Taylor Teague, Lindsay Palmer, and Allie Schmider all contributed to the Tartan's success. The Tartans are now 6-0 in league play while Sage Hill fell to 4-1. | | | Girls Golf | Fall | | Volleyball in Brentwood Classic | Unfortunately, the girls’ volleyball team was unable to have another awesome weekend. Tartans did not bring their "A" game to the tournament and finished with an overall record of 2-3. The Tartans were able to beat the teams they should but unable to come up with any big wins. The day began with a match up with Div. 4 San Diego powerhouse Francis Parker. The team recorded 103 digs in the match but the offense was lacking. Because of the Tartans great defense they were able to push Parker to three games, eventually losing 19-25, 26-24 and 9-15. The second round of pool play brought St. Monica. The Tartans were able to squeak out a victory with a 26-24, 19-25, 15-10 score. Jena Brion led the team with 8 kills and 15 digs. Katie McComb had 6 kills and 6 digs. Laura Canright and Leslie Wiekamp had 11 and 14 digs respectively. The last match of pool play brought defending CIF Champion Brentwood. The Tartans came ready to play in this match and fought very well but fell short 22-25, 20-25. Jena and Callan both had 6 kills and Jena added 13 digs. The Tartans are looking forward to a rematch with the defending Champions on October 21st. With only three rounds of playoffs the Tartans faced the all girls’ school, Connelly. The team played well enough to hold off strong charges by Connelly and advance to the semi-finals with a 25-23, 25-23 victory. Jena Brion had 6 kills and 8 digs and Jill Brunswick and 8 digs and a kill. The Semi-finals had the Tartans face Francis Parker again. Although the scores do not indicate it the Tartans played and fought much better in this match. Even though they lost 19-25, 20-25 the match was still well played. Callan Smith led all players with 7 kills. Jena Brion added 3 kills and 21 digs. Defense was key for the Tartans who accumulated 73 digs in the match. Francis Parker went on to with the Brentwood Classic defeating Western Christian. Jaclyn Mason and Callan Smith were selected to the All-Tournament Team – Congratulations!
| | | V Girls Volleyball | | | Football extends record to 4-0 | The Tartans continued their winning ways last Friday night by beating previously unbeaten Calvary Chapel of Murrieta 34-0. A tough Murrieta defense made it difficult for the Tartans to move the ball but once again great defense provided many opportunities for the offense to score. Even though the Tartans lost the ball four times (2 interceptions, 2 fumbles) they were still able to score 34 points in the game. Offensively, the Tartans rushed for 230 yards and passed for another 172. Sebastian Bacon led all rushers with 100 yards on 9 carries and Mack Mower caught 4 passes for 101 yards and 2 touchdowns. J.P. Sutro added his first two field goals of the season connecting on a 28 yard field goal in the second quarter and then scoring from 34 yards out in the third quarter. Defensively, St. Margaret’s was led by Michael Martin who played strong safety for the first time and came up with many key tackles during the game. The defensive line again played well, stopping the Warriors many times on third down and forcing them to punt. The Tartans have a bye this week and will take on Saddleback Valley Christian next Friday night at St. Margaret’s.
| | | V Football | | | Volleyball Sweeps Whitney | The Tartan volleyball teams were hungry for a victory in their league opener against Whitney HS. The Freshman team started the day off with an awesome victory: 25-20, 25-17. Excellent serving from Erin Kircher and nine consecutive points by Christina Mooradian helped the Tartans to victory. The coaches are so pleased with the spirit, intensity, and work ethic that the new kids and the veterans have demonstrated thus far. It has allowed us to do some nice training that we typically haven’t been able to do this early.” All this bodes well for a talented and diversified group. This year is unique in that no matter which direction you look on the track, we have some standouts and quite a bit of depth. There are some really talented newcomers who will certainly provide some fireworks this season. Leading the way could be the hurdlers. “We’ve always taken a lot of pride in the hurdle events and this year we have a group of girls who share this enthusiasm.” Leading the way will be defending league champion and CIF Finalist Adrienne Baker. Coming off an amazing freshman year, Adrienne looks to move forward and assert herself as a premier 100 and 300 meter hurdler in the Southern Section. “Adrienne has set her sights high for this season and we are certain she will achieve great things. After what she did last year, the sky is the limit.” Taylor Rutherford has everyone rooting for her this season as she looks to continue to develop in her specialty events 100 and 300 meter hurdles. “Taylor is a technically sound hurdler who is just relentless in terms of her work ethic. We just love the drive and determination that she demonstrates every single day. Add this to her team attitude and positive perspective; and she is a quality person to have on any team.” Lauren-Leigh Frum is having a nice early season and looking good over the hurdles at this stage, as is fellow sophomore Danielle Moran. As if these returnees weren’t enough, add to the mix freshman Sarah Grayden and junior newcomers Katharine McIntyre and Katie McComb and you’re looking at not only nice depth, but standouts as well. “Katie has picked up the technique very quickly. She is a natural at this and we’re looking forward to some nice things from her this season.” The 2004 campaign was marked by some terrific distance runners and this year looks to be no different. Leading the charge again this season will be junior Lauren Dunlop. League runner-up in the 1600 and 3200 last season, she has certainly progressed since that point. The league is very strong in the distance events so what she carries in with her in terms of last season’s success and what we’ve seen from her so far this season, she will certainly be towards the front of a pack of elite distance runners in this league. “The best part about Lauren (even greater than her natural talent) is her attitude. She never backs down to anything and we love it.” Fellow Junior Kaitlin Moholy was strong in the 3200 last season and could set the pace again this year. In true Katilin fashion, she’s been giving 100% every single day so far this season. Sophomore Sarah Verano looks to continue her progress from season to season. “She had a wonderful cross country season and we know this will carry over to the track this spring. She is an intense athlete and has the personality and talent to do very well again this season.” Senior Ursula Moran will provide nice depth in the distance events as well. The girl who is turning heads every single day is freshman Jais Tollette. The cross country standout is doing much the same this year in the distance events. “Granted, all we have to go by is what she’s been doing during interval workouts, but she is looking very strong. But, we’ve seen her compete before in cross country and we know what kind of mental make-up she has. She is going to be a good one.” Her speed and endurance will make her a great 800 meter runner. Liz Simon is also making a name for herself with a terrific attitude and tremendous desire. Leading the way in the sprint events will once again be senior Jordan Meridith. The defending 200 and 400 meter champion will look to improve on last year’s impressive season. “She’s going to have to step up a bit in terms of training from last year. When she combines this with her graceful yet powerful stride, she is going to do some nice things this season.” Lauren-Leigh Frum was a league finalist in the 100 last season and will continue to specialize in the event this year (to go along with the hurdles). It’s likely that she will continue to hold down the fort in the lead-off leg again this season for the 4 X 100 relay team. Sophomore Christina Avalone is a welcome addition to the group this year as she’s already shown some nice foot speed and natural determination. Freshman Claire Pyott has already improved by leaps and bounds in just three weeks. “We think Claire is a diamond in the rough. This is just so new to her but it has quickly become apparent to all of us that she can be a really good 400/800 meter runner this season (and beyond).” Fellow freshman Jaime Schiffer will take to the track this season after asserting herself as a dynamite soccer player in the winter. “Good athletes are good athletes. It doesn’t matter what the sport, they usually do just fine. History has shown us that track is always just a natural fit for top soccer players.” The field events aren’t to be outdone as things look good in every direction. In the horizontal jumps, Stephanie Davis leads the way with leadership and talent. “Our hope is that her last year is the best. She’s had an amazing track & field career so far and it would be nice to see her go out on top.” Joining her in the long and triple jumps are juniors Kristin Collier and Rebecca Courdy. The sophomores tout some nice jumpers in 2004 League Finalists Christina Edwards, Chase Lind and Adrienne Baker as well as fellow sophomore Olivia Saladino. Merissa Ren and Sarah Grayden have taken to the events quickly and look to help the girls’ lead the way in these two events. The veritical jumps might be our most improved events this season as a slew of girls look forward to clearing the various bars. In the pole vault, Sarah Moreland will lead the way again this season and will look to guide a group of new vaulters to great heights. “What we love about Sarah is her primary focus remains true at all times. That focus is team. She understands the nature of team track and field and values this above anything else.” Merissa Ren, with her dance and karate background, has already shown giant steps forward in just a couple weeks. “She is going to be very good in this event; no doubt about it.” Joining these girls are freshmen Tan Tan Araya, Melina Zuniga, Jais Tollette, Breanna Meece and sophomores Chase Lind and Sarah Verano. Just across the track is a nice contingent of high jumpers. “We’ve already seen some nice enthusiasm and excitement for this event. When you have this as a coach, it makes things easy.” Besides previous league standouts like Stephanie Davis, Adrienne Baker, Chase Lind, and Christina Edwards, we’ll see the likes of Merissa Ren and Breanna Meece. It’s going to be an exciting event for these girls. In the throwing ring will be a new group of stars to go along with senior Sarah Moreland. Newcomer Annie Busch has already shown a natural ability in the shot put and can assert herself on our top 5 list right away. “She has a healthy, competitive nature about her that typically leads to success in track and field. We just like that she wants to do a variety of events this year; two of which will be the shot and disc.” Freshman Paige Selby is going to be exciting to watch develop over the course of the year. She has a mature outlook towards athletics and has already impressed her coaches. The Tartan girls will take to the track and field for the first time on Saturday, March 12 at Saddleback College. “This will be a nice jumping off point for us. Once we get one meet behind us, we can set our sights on the rest of the season. The most important thing for us is to get some experience from this meet and to see where we are at as a collective group. If what we’ve seen in practice is an accurate perception, our hunch is that we are at a high level with this 2005 team.” Field events begin at 2:00 and running events begin at 3:00 with the later events being run under the lights. More meet information will be sent home with the athletes later in the week.

There was a large cast of characters leading the way for the boy’s team. The 2005 Track and Field Academy League MVP got off to a tremendous start in two of his specialty events. Blazing the track in the 110 hurdles with a time 15.8 and coming back in the 300 hurdles with a nice early season time of 42.2, Randy has set himself up to be a top notch hurdler at the CIF level. Not to be outdone, junior teammate Johnny Quinn stole the stadium with his majestic jump of 14-6 in the pole vault. That is well over a foot higher than the jump Johnny made last year at the CIF Finals. At present, he is the top mark of all vaulters in Division 4 of the Southern Section as well as on the top list of Orange County and State vaulters. Freshman Scott DeYoung made a nice introduction to his high school career leaping to an 18 foot plus long jump and a swift 11.7 in the 100. Not only that, he took the baton on the anchor leg of the 4 X 400 about 30 meters back and closed the gap by the 200 mark. The boys won the event with a time of 4:46.7. The 1600 meter runners were very impressive led by Freshman Tyler Stowers. In his first track and field meet, Tyler ran a great race, finishing 2nd, with a time of 4:56.9. Teammate Sean McArthur, in his first race, ran 4:57.15. In the throwing events, Matt Furman put the shot 33-3.75 and finished 4th overall while teammate Kevin Maghami threw the discus 107-4 (3rd) and Matt 102-5.5 (4th). | | | Track&Field | Spring | | St. Margaret's Girls' Track and Field Team Opens Season Impressively | After an amazing 2004 season, the girls’ track and field team looks to be even better in 2005. After just their first meet together, there is a lot to be excited about. Starting with the distance events, Lauren Dunlop, Kaitlin Moholy, Sarah Verano and Jais Tollette held their own looking very impressive in the 800 and 1600. Lauren rocketed to a swift early season time of 4:49.7 in the 1600 and 2:35.7 in the 800. Jais Tollette finished 3rd overall in her first career high school start by moving through the 800 in a swift 2:39.3. Sarah was next in the parade with a nice early season time of 2:44.4. Joining Lauren in the 1600 was teammate Kaitlin Moholy who raced to nice 6:15.7. Speaking of first time racers, freshman Claire Pyott turned heads with a very impressive 400 time of 67.9. “That performance alone shows just how much Claire has in her. She is going to be a very good runner here over a four year period.” Sophomore Lauren-Leigh Frum posted a good early season 100 time of 13.7 to go along with her hurdle race. Taylor Rutherford led the way for an amazing group of hurdles yesterday. Taylor (17.7) and teammate Rebecca Courdy (18.1) show that they are going to be among the elite in the league in the 100 hurdles. Perhaps the most impressive group performance on the day was the contingent of 300 hurdlers. “We knew this was going to be a strong event for us this season, but yesterday was unbelievable.” Unbelievable indeed as 4 of the top 6 were Tartans. Taylor led the way with a time of 53.0 (2nd), following her was Lauren-Leigh Frum (53.9), Katie McComb (54.0) and Katharine McIntyre (55.6). To cap off a terrific day of running events, the girls' 4 X 400 relay brought home a nice victory. Jordan Meridith led things off and gave the girls a commanding lead. Jais Tollette and Sarah Verano continued through the next two legs and gave anchor Taylor Rutherford the lead going into the last leg. Taylor brough home the win with a nice early season time of 4:30.8. The field events were just as successful as the track events. In the pole vault, Sarah Moreland, Merissa Ren, Lauren Johnson, Melina Zuniga, Jais Tollette, and Tan-Tan Araya claimed 6 of the top 7 spots. Katharine McIntyre led the way in the long jump (13-11) while freshman Sarah Grayden triple jumped her way to a 4th place finish (29-6). In the shot put, Annie Bush looks to lay claim to a school record this year as she threw 22.7.5 in her first meet ever. The latest tune-up came with Sage Hill at Saddleback College on Thursday. While the girls came away with a narrow victory, the boys were on the other side of a close 11 point loss. "Wins and losses don't mean a whole lot at this point in the season. It all is focused on being at our best in May. Right now, the coaches are very happy with where we are at." Leading the way for the girls in the distance events was newcomer Kylie Hunsaker as she swept the 1600 and 3200 in impressive fashion. Freshman Jais Tollette was just behind her taking 2nd in both as well. Adrienne Baker, Rebecca Courdy, and Taylor Rutherford held their own in the hurdle races as each scored valuable team points. Paige Selby, Annie Busch and Liz Simon held down the fort in the throwing events with a 2, 3, 4 finish in the shot put respectively and Annie earning a 2nd in the discus. Competing against 22 schools from all over the state, 16 of whom are Division I or II programs, the Division IV Tartans earned 13 CIF qualifying times, won two individual titles, had 5 finalists (top-8 swims), and broke two school records! Paul Zaich proved too much for all competitors, pulling away from the field to win both the 200 IM (1:55.97) and 100 breaststroke (58.24). The two swims are both All-America qualifying times (top-30 in the US) and the IM is a new lifetime best! With the wins, Paul also was named Meet High Point Winner for the boys, a first for anyone outside of Division I or II in the history of the meet. Paul also lead off the CIF-qualifying 200 free relay which included Ronney Tay, Michael Wong, and Jeff Carpenter. His 22.60 lead-off is a new school record in the 50 free. Finally, only 20 minutes after his 100 BS effort, he anchored the same tandem in the 400 free relay to a CIF qualifying (and new school record of) 3:45.25. Enough about Paul, elsewhere for the boys, Ronney Tay swam to a lifetime best and CIF time in the 100 breaststroke and Carpenter swam lifetime bests in his 100 back and on both legs of the relays. Wong's split on the 400 relay was a lifetime best for him. There was no shortage of dynamite swims on the girls side. Super-sophs Oriana Poindexter (6th-200 IM; 9th-100 BS) and Sylvia Zaich (7th-200 IM; 8th-100 BS) each qualified for CIF in their two events (plus Oriana's lead-off on the free relay) and lead the Tartan Medley and 400 Free Relays (with Hannah Ng and Elizabeth Rooklidge) to season-best and CIF qualifying times. The Tartans finished the first half tied 5-5. In the second, they gave their all, with over five girls contributing goals, with only one major scorer for Bishop's. The regulation time finished knotted at 10, and the first extra three minute. period ended scoreless. In their hearts, the girls should be proud of the effort in this game. The scoreboard did not reflect their winning play. Bishop's put in two goals to finish the scoring with 1:30 remaining in the second overtime. The girls played their guts out and the coaches are proud. The Tartans fall to 2-4 on the season and face a strong Coronado team tomorrow. | | | Girls Lacrosse | spring | | Boys Lacrosse Crush El Toro in OCLA Matchup | The Tartans beat south division leader El Toro (4-1) 15-3 at home last night to go 3-0 in league play. Midfielder Mike Duenes (1a), with team high 8 ground balls stumped the El Toro face off units with stellar long pole play. | | | V Boys Lacrosse | Spring | | Girls lacrosse drops solid game to Coronado | The girls played a respectable game with a limited roster (due to injuries and college visits) against a SD powerhouse, with a 7-3 halftime score. The final score 12-6, shows the Tartans are not far from being competitive with top SD teams. Goalie Emma Waller earned girl of the game honors with several point blank saves. Caitlin Grainger gained confidence with multiple scores late in the game. The Tartans (2-5) next face San Dieguito at home on Wednesday at 4 PM. | | | Girls Lacrosse | Spring | | Tartan Track & Field Moves to New Level at Russell Cup | Carpinteria proved to be a home away from home for the Tartan Track and Field Team as many team members turned in some amazing performances against over thirty of the top teams in Division 4 of CIF Southern Section. Leading the way for the boys was Johnny Quinn. All eyes were on him as the crowd cheered with appreciation as he cleared 15-4 in the pole vault. The significance of this height is three fold. First, the crowd knew that it set a new Russell Cup and Stadium Record. To put this in perspective, the Russell Cup has been contested for the last 86 years and Johnny's vault stands up as the best ever. Not only that, nobody in the history of the track and field stadium has vaulted above 14-6 (until Johnny). Second, it now is the leading mark in Orange County and among the top 10 in the State of California. And finally, it puts his name atop other notable St. Margaret's pole vaulter Chris Ostoich (15-3) as the new school record holder. The other event winner on the day for the Tartans was senior Randy Rense. His 16.18 effort in the 110 hurdles was good for top honors. Kenton Murray gave a head turning performance in the 800 breaking through to 2:06 and is among the leaders in the league in that event. Cody Tucker dropped into the 10 minute range in the 3200 and now sets himself up to be among the best in that event in the Academy League. Scott DeYoung captured a 2nd place finish in the frosh/soph division of the 200 with a time of 24.11 and followed up with a 6th place 18-4 long jump effort. Justin Swanson equaled his personal best in the pole vault (9-6) and tied for 3rd in the frosh/soph division. Sean McArthur turned in a personal best 4:51.58 in the 1600. The girls were equally impressive at the 86 year old invitational. Standing atop the podium was two time event winner Adrienne Baker. Her personal best 100 hurdle time of 17.69 was good for the frosh/soph division victory. However, her 300 hurdle time of 49.40 not only earned her a commanding event victory, but it also was fast enough to put her name in the history books as the fastest frosh/soph 300 meter hurdler in the 86 year history of the Russell Cup. Kylie Hunsaker certainly got things rolling for the Tartans as she showed where she is at at this point in the season turning in a wonderful 1600 meter race. In a tight battle with some notable cross country CIF Finalists, Kylie showed her determination and talent as she outsprinted some fine runners in the last 100 meters to win the frosh/soph race in a fantastic time of 5:26.63. Jais Tollette celebrated her birthday with a personal best time of 2:30.96 in the 800. Not to be outdone, Junior Lauren Dunlop broke through big time in the 3200. Running a personal best 12:28.20, she set herself up to have an exciting late season in the distance events. In the field for the girls, Katharine McIntyre turned in some amazing jumps in the long and triple. Her 30-2 triple is a great mark and is the first time she's broken through the 30 foot barrier in her career. Though, she wasn't done yet as she soared to a 14-4 leap in the long jump (another personal record). Both marks set her up to be among the best in the Academy League. The next action for the Tartans comes on Thursday with the final league tune-up meet at Oxford against the rest of the league. Typically, the Tartans focus in on a few events and look to get things ready for the upcoming League Prelims in just over a week. | | | Track&Field | | | Girls Lacrosse defeats San Dieguito 6-4 for league victory | After some lackluster clearing in the first half, the Tartans put in a third straight solid game and came away with a Coastal League win on Wednesday against San Dieguito Academy. The Tartans were led early on by solid goaltending by Emma Waller. The defense played relentlessly and hustled with the ball in their zone for much of the latter minutes of the first stanza. The first half finished tied and the Tartans were in familiar territory in a tied game with six minutes remaining. Led by "girl of the game" Jessica Demorest, the Tartans maintained their poise and posessed the ball for most of the final minutes. Christina Carabini, Caitlin Grainger, Emma Wade-West, and Leanne tranter all handled the ball well at Home, and Jessica iced the game with an eight meter goal with 1:14 on the clock, putting the game effectively out of reach. The coaches were both excited that the girls handled the pressure situation with composure and finished the game to the last whistle. The Tartans improve to 3-5 on the season (1-2 in the Coastal League) while San Dieguito drops to 8-3 on the season and 1-2 in the league. The game on Friday 4/22 against Preuss will be a forfeit by Preuss, which will give the Tartans a 2-2 league record going into a crucial week with re-matches against Francis Parker and Bishop's. | | | Girls Lacrosse | spring | | St. Margaret's Has Its First Orange County Track and Field Champion | Johnny Quinn has become a trivia question for the future. He now ranks besides fine Tartan Track & Field athletes of the past like Ostoich, Parkinson, Lange and Downey. However, he's the first to lay claim to an amazing distinction. Last Saturday at the Orange County Championships, Johnny vaulted 15-0 to beat the competition and earn our school's first Track and Field Individual Orange County Championship. "It will be the first of many such distinctions for Johnny as he progresses through this season and next." Joining Johnny at the elite level meet was teammate Randy Rense who also made a name for himself at the county level. Finishing as the 8th best 110 Hurdler (setting a personal record of 15.83) and 13th among the best 300 Hurdlers in the county (41.71). Justin Swanson also set a personal record in the Pole Vault clearing 10-0 for the first time in his career. Kenton Murray (800) and Cody Tucker (3200)also set personal records in their respective events by having spirited races. Kenton covered the two lap race in 2:04.54 and Cody traversed the two mile race in 10:38.73. On the girls' side, Kylie Hunsaker had a tremendous day as she won her heat of the 1600 in a time of 5:27.02. She came back later in the day and ran a terrific 3200 setting a new school record (11:53.86). Lauren Dunlop had a seasonal best in the 1600 covering the distance in 5:41.02. Jais Tollette shined on the track and in the field. She cleared 7-0 for the first time in her career in the Pole Vault and came back to run a swift 2:32.17 in the 800. Taylor Rutherford had a personal record day in the 100 hurdles (17.69) and sets herself up for a terrific Academy League Prelims and Finals. | | | Track&Field | | | Girls lacrosse overpowered by Francis Parker | The Tartans played well in the first half, staying within two goals until five minutes remaining, but Parker made the lead 7-2 at the half with some excellent transition. During the second half, the Tartans scored a quick goal, but was matched by some fast Parker players to finish the game at 11-3. Savannah Braithwaite played well on both ends of the field, and Emma Wade-West and Leanne Trainter both improved at Home. The Tartans (4-6, 2-3 in league) next face The Bishop's School on Friday, where they hope to avenge a last second fluke from their first meeting. This game will be played at San Dieguito Academy. | | | Boys Golf | | | League Prelims Still On as Planned | Despite the overnight rain, the Academy League Prelims will continue as scheduled (as of 11:45 am). After speaking with the Saddleback College Head Track and Field Coach, he too feels everything should be able to go as scheduled. The facility is top of the line in terms of draining and all should be fine by 2:30. Any other questions can be directed to Coach Allison. | | | Track&Field | | | Tartans can't outpace Bishop's | The Tartans played well in the first half, possessing the ball on offense, but trailed at halftime 5-2 due to solid transition by Bishop's. In the second half, the Knights continued to press on offense, which forced the Tartans into an up-tempo game. Tri-Captain Whit Kushner and Senior Savannah Braithwaite earned girl of the game honors. Whit hustled on both ends of the field, limiting Bishop's transition options. Savannah was key on several draws and ground balls throughout the match. The Tartans now stand at 4-7 and finish with two more league matches. | | | Girls Lacrosse | Spring | | It's Full Speed Ahead for Tartan Track & Field Team | The Tartan Track & Field team always has two goals in mind as they approach this time of the season. That is, put together their best team performance and qualify as many people in as many events as possible for the finals. Both were accomplished by the boys and girls teams last Thursday at the Academy League Prelims. “Typically, we like to highlight a few kids who had personal or seasonal bests. In the case of the Prelims, we had over 40 kids have this type of performance in one or more events. It really is remarkable that everything came together as it did for us on Thursday.” The Academy League Prelims brings together every athlete in every event to determine who earns one of eight qualification spots for next weeks finals. Then, those eight compete Thursday to determine team championships, individual event championships, and CIF qualifications. Girls’ Team Highlights The girls’ team set the tone for what can be a very exciting League Finals next Thursday. Everything went as planned and now their sights are set on winning their 8th consecutive Academy League Championship. “Nothing comes easy and there is still one week ahead of us; but we couldn’t be happier with what was done last week to set the stage for this week.” With one more terrific team performance, the girls can achieve their collective goal. One could have looked at just about any event area to see some outstanding performances by everyone. In the running events, Kylie Hunsaker set an Academy League Record in the 1600 while Lauren Dunlop had a personal record setting performance in the same event. These two, along with Sarah Verano and Jais Tollette certainly made a nice statement for the girls’ team in the distance events. In the hurdles, lanes will be packed with Tartans in the finals on Thursday. Adrienne Baker, Taylor Rutherford, Rebecca Courdy and Katie McComb all earned a spot in this Friday’s 100 meter hurdle final as well as the 300 meter hurdle final. “These four girls can pick up some huge team points for us.” In the sprints, Jaime Schiffer qualified in the 100 and 200. “This was a nice surprise because she’s just getting her feet wet in this sport and she’s seen some nice improvement. She had to have her best races of the season to qualify and she did just that.” Joining Jaime in the 100 will be Rebecca Courdy (one of her 4 events on Friday). Jordan Meridith continues a fine career earning a spot in the 200 and also the 400. The two time 400 meter champion has the leading time going into Friday’s final but there is certainly a whole group of girls right around the same ballpark. Joining Jordan in the 400 is freshman Claire Pyott. “As it turned out, Claire had to have a personal best race to qualify and it was so exciting to see her name on the list. She’s a top notch athlete.” In the field is where the girls’ will bring in a ton of points. Of the eight high jump qualifiers, six will be wearing Tartan Blue. Veterans Stephanie Davis, Adrienne Baker, Lauren Dunlop and Chase Lind will be joined by newcomers Rebecca Courdy and Sarah Grayden. Just across the track are the slew of Pole Vaulters that are coming right along in the technical event. Two time league champion Lauren Johnson will be joined by senior teammate Sarah Moreland, sophomores Chase Lind and Christina Edwards, and freshmen Merissa Ren, Jais Tollette, and Tan-Tan Araya. The horizontal jumpers had an amazing day with some amazing marks. Even those who didn’t qualify should be commended for having personal record setting days. In the Long Jump Stephanie Davis leads a fine contingent of Tartan Jumpers. Her 13-11 is a seasonal best and puts her third overall going into next week’s final. Joining Stephanie is Christina Edwards and Chase Lind who both had personal record 13 foot jumps (13-6 and 13-5 respectively). Rounding out the long jumpers is Katharine McIntyre who will look to move up the charts this Thursday. Stephanie again leads the way in the Triple Jump by breaking through the 30 foot mark again this year. Also qualifying was Sarah Grayden, Katharine McIntyre, and Merissa Ren. From the looks of things, the girls look very solid right now. Our next goal is to have an even better day next Thursday to solidify another team title. “There are some very good teams in this league with some amazing athletes. The girls can’t take anything for granted this week and must come out with the same kind of intensity, effort and enthusiasms as they’ve had all season long. When it’s all said and done, hopefully we can say (whether we win or not) that we had our best day together when it meant the most.” Boys’ Team Highlights The usual cast of characters shined brightly for the boys’ team this past Thursday at the Prelims. “We are pretty strong in most events. However, this year, unlike any year we can remember, the field events will carry a huge load for us on Thursday at the Finals.” Starting with the throwing events, you can see some top notch Tartans in the finals. Kevin Maghami and Matt Furman have the top two entry marks and can give the boys’ team a nice boost; one we haven’t had in quite some time. Joining Kevin and Matt in the shot put is Doug Lunn who has made nice improvement over the course of the year to earn a spot in the finals. In the vertical jumps, Randy Rense, Johnny Quinn, and David Wheatley will have an opportunity to provide some big team points with good days in the high jump. Over in the pole vault, Johnny and Justin Swanson will look for the 1-2 finish. Not to be outdone, the horizontal jumpers are making a nice statement late in the season. “So many of these guys had personal record type days to land themselves in the finals. When you can pack so many guys in the top 8, you are in good position to take some top spots.” The triple jump will feature five Tartans as Randy, Tak Matsushita, Justin Swanson, Sean Niu, and Will Ary all qualified by being in the top 8. In the long jump, Tak Matsushita had a huge day leaping 17-11.25 to qualify for the finals. Scott DeYoung will join him and make a nice statement in the event. On the Track, Scott DeYoung will represent the sprinters well as he earned the top entry in the 400 and the 2nd seed in the 200. “He’s going to score points for the boys’ team. It’s nice to have a freshman make this kind of impact at the league level.” The distance events won’t have any shortage of Tartans in it as all of the 1600 meter boys qualified for the finals. Cody Tucker, Kenton Murray, Sean McArthur, and Tyler Stowers all earned entry for Thursday’s final. Additionally, Kenton and Sean will be joined by Desmond Smith in the 800. “When you take what we can do in the 800 and 1600 and throw in the 3200, we can do very well in these events. It might come down to pulling a few guys from each race to allow them to have top notch races in just one or two of the three distance events.” All hurdlers who raced Thursday qualified for the finals. Leading the charge is senior Randy Rense. His 15.0 and 42.0 are top qualifying times going into this week’s finals. Joining Randy are seniors Will Ary and Mark Williams; all of whom can earn valuable team points. All in all, the boys did exactly what we thought they would do. It’s interesting because historically we always seem to be a decent team during the season and an amazing team during the league championship portion of the season. Once we put everyone in their full allotment of events and we’ve had a full season of training, we have a seriously competitive team. Thursday showed that and hopefully, we’ll continue to progress this Thursday and culminate the league portion of the season

The girls 4x50 Medley (Connon, Binley, Lanni, freshman Marni Thomas), 4x50 Free (Binley, senior Alex Gangolli, junior Caitlin Marticorena, senior Brieana Marticorena), and the 4x100 Free Relay of (Thomas, Parker, Connon, and Barrett) each swam to top-8 finishes. The boys, though out manned by at least a 3:1 margin by each of the other teams, qualified 15 of a possible 16 swims for the finals! In addition to Paul, strong efforts were turned in by Ronney Tay (4th-50 freestyle, 3rd-100 breaststroke) and freshman Jeff Carpenter (4th-200 freestyle, 5th-100 backstroke). All four of their times were lifetime bests. Senior Michael Wong reached the finals in the 50 (8th) and 100 (7th) freestyle and Chandler Moisen in the 100 (8th) and 200 (6th) freestyles. Williams Sammons continued his late season improvements with an 8th place finish and lifetime best in the 100 backstroke. Relays were another positive for the Tartans. Juggling the line-up to swim all three, the 4x50 Medley (Paul, Ronney, Michael, Jeff) just missed the school record in 1:52.11. The 4x50 Free (Ronney, Chandler, William, Michael) and the 4x100 Free (Paul, Chandler, William, Jeff) finished xx and xx, respectively. All three relays surpassed the CIF qualifying times. All told, the Tartans swam to 20 personal best times and 30 of 39 swims qualified for the League Finals and all 20 entered athletes swam at finals. The CIF preliminaries begin Tuesday at Belmont Shore Olympic Pool in Long Beach with Finals on Thursday at 6:00pm. The Tartan girls are expected to challenge for as many as 5 CIF titles and a finish in the top-5. The boys are seeking a top-15 finish and to return at least two of their relays to the finals. Paul Zaich is shooting for two CIF titles and top-5 finishes in the nation in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke. Congratulations to all of the Tartan swimmers for their successful efforts at the Academy League Finals and a special “thank you” to Coaches Tara Hopwood and Kyle Kermott for their leadership and guidance at the meet.
| | | Swimming&Diving | | | Girls' Track and Field Team Makes it Eight Straight | The Tartan Girls’ Track and Field team continued the tradition with a fantastic team performance at the Academy League Finals and came home with their eighth straight Academy League Championship which dates back to 1998. “It was another wonderful team performance for the girls. There was no question that they were ready and gave their very best effort. They certainly worked hard all season to reach this point and it was nice to see such a great, collective effort.” Their best was certainly enough as they outdistanced the competition through the 16 events. St. Margaret’s 135 Sage Hill 72 Whitney 63 Oxford 51 Brethren Christian 13 As has been the case all season, there were many stars and highlights in the performance. In the sprinting events, Jordan Meridith brought home her 3rd straight 400 meter championship running a seasonal best time of 1:02.4. She also led off the 2nd place 4 X 400 relay team consisting of herself, Jais Tollette, Claire Pyott, and Kylie Hunsaker and anchored the 2nd place 4 X 100 team of Jaime Schiffer, Stephanie Davis, and Adrienne Baker. Jaime Schiffer made terrific improvement over the final month of the season as she not only qualified for the 100 and 200 meter finals, but finished 6th and 5th respectively to go along with her leadoff leg in the 4 X 100. Claire Pyott had a seasonal best in the 400 with her 1:07.3 clocking. The distance events, which have provided some terrific depth all season long, continued with its amazing ways again at the League Finals. Jais Tollette collected her first running event championship in a very exciting 800 meter race (2:30.4). Sarah Verano earned a second place finish with a time 2:41.4. In the 1600, it was 1-3-4 finish for the Tartans as Kylie Hunsaker earned her first event championship in a time of 5:29.6. Joining Kylie in the wonderful team performance were Lauren Dunlop (5:37.4) and Sarah Verano (5:51.0). Finishing off the distance sweep came late in the meet with the 3200 meter run. Kylie Hunsaker and Lauren Dunlop went 1-2 with Jais Tollete finishing 4th and Ursula Moran 6th. Perhaps the most exciting race of the day came in a very competitive 100 hurdle field. With only a few CIF spots available, some good hurdlers would miss the cut. Adrienne Baker finished 2nd with a time of 16.3 and Taylor Rutherford finished 3rd with a time of 16.6. To put this in perspective, CIF set a time standard for 2nd and 3rd place qualifiers of 18.9. Unfortunately, 4th place finishers aren’t eligible to qualify even if they hit this standard. 7 of the 8 girls in the race ran 18.0 or below! Rebecca Courdy’s 17.2 and Katie McComb’s 18.0 were excellent races a terrific end to their season. In the 300 Hurdles, Adrienne Baker won her 2nd consecutive 300 meter hurdle title clocking a time of 48.3. She will certainly make a statement at the CIF level again this season. Rebecca Courdy had a personal record time of 51.7 and Taylor Rutherford had a terrific race as well (52.8). Those two finished 5th and 6th respectively. The field events gave the Tartan girls’ a nice lift as well. In the high jump, Lauren Dunlop and Adrienne Baker tied for 2nd and brought home 5 points each as a result. Stephanie Davis earned a 5th place spot, followed by Sarah Grayden and Chase Lind finishing 6th and 7th respectively. It was a 1-6 sweep for the girls in the pole vault with Jais Tollette leading the charge. Her 7-6 jump gave her a second Academy League Event Championship. Joining Jais at CIF competition this weekend will be fellow freshman Merissa Ren and junior Lauren Johnson. In the long jump, Stephanie her best jump in two years with an amazing 15-1.75 leap. That was good to sneak her up into 2nd place and qualify for CIF. Katharine McIntyre finished 4th with her 13-9.5 followed by Christina Edwards and Chase Lind (6th and 8th respectively). Stephanie, Katharine, and Sarah continued the impressive field event day with a 3-4-6 finish in the triple jump. In another one of those highly competitive events, Steph jumped 31-7, Katharine 30-0.5, and Sarah 28-10.5. It was a wonderful day for the girls’ team as they didn’t let their previous successes play a role in how they competed. Nothing was taken for granted and they showed why they have been the class of the league all season long. “When you have the success that the girls have achieved over the years, it is clear that staying on top is just as difficult as getting there. Certainly, the girls weren’t affected by that pressure and just went about their individual and collective business. In short, it was a fun day to watch as everything came together in a perfect way.”
| | | Track&Field | Spring | | Boys’ Track & Field Team Comes from “Nowhere” to Dominate League Finals | After a season of progression and improvement, the boys came through just as we suspected they would at the Academy League Finals last week. The win gave them their 4th consecutive Academy League Championship. “There was no question that the boys were a very good team. Up to this point, however, the coaches were very calculated with event entries so as to not overload them at the inappropriate time. However, when the league finals come around, it’s full steam ahead.” Full steam ahead indeed as the boys’ gave an incredibly strong team performance to capture the title. St. Margaret’s 140 Sage Hill 72 Whitney High School 59 Oxford Academy 48 Brethren Christian 12 Leading the way again was senior Randy Rense. “It’s been an amazing career for him as he’s been towards the top or at the top in every single one of his events over a four year period. The development he’s made is a testament to the hard work he’s put in over his time here.” Randy won the 110 hurdles (15.6) and 300 hurdles (41.5) to give him two of his three individual event championships. In the sprinting events, Scott DeYoung set the pace as he represented the Tartans well. In the 400, he ran a great freshman time of 52.4 and is now set up to have an opportunity to qualify for the CIF Finals on Saturday. On top of that, he finished 2nd in the 200 as well with a time of 23.1. Both relays scored points towards the team total as well. Justin Swanson, Mark Williams, Sean Dreyer, and Elmer Flores finished 4th in a terrific race for them. “It was the 1st time that these four ran together and their handoffs were flawless. It was nice to see them get the meet started right for the boys’ team.” In the final running event of the day, Sean McArthur, Kenton Murray, Desmond Smith and Scott DeYoung ran a time that is getting very close to a long standing school record. Their 3:39.4 puts the 11 year old record in jeopardy this weekend at the CIF Prelims. The group finished 2nd in the event to cap off a great day for everyone. The distance events proved solid once again. In the 800, Kenton Murray and Desmond Smith finished 2-3 respectively and earned much coveted CIF spots for this Saturday. In a thrilling race, Cody Tucker lunged at the line to win the 1600 meter championship by the slimmest of margins. His 4:41.0 was just .3 seconds ahead of another fine Oxford runner. Sean McArthur (4:52.0) and Tyler Stowers (4:59.1) joined Cody by finishing 5th and 8th respectively. As was expected, the field events are where the Tartan boys made huge ground in the team title. In the throwing events, juniors Mat Furman and Kevin Maghami had spectacular days to score 24 points between the two of them. Matt let fly a personal record setting throw in the discus of 119-2.5 to win the event. Right behind him with a throw of 110-7 was his teammate Kevin. Over in the shot put ring, the two finished 2-3 with Kevin putting the shot 38-11.5 and Matt giving a 37-10 effort. “That was a huge lift for the boys’ team. It was nice knowing we had two of the best throwers in the league wearing Tartan Blue. In the triple jump, Randy Rense captured his third individual event title with a leap of 41-2.25. Coming in 3rd and moving significantly up the charts from early season was Tak Matsushita. His 36-9 jump was certainly good enough to qualify him for CIF competition. Will Ay and Sean Niu rounded out the fine day in the event with 4th and 6th place finishes respectively. In the long jump, Scott DeYoung and Tak finished 4-5 which was an improvement from where they were seeded after the prelims. In the high jump, the Tartan boys earned 15 of the possible 21 points by having 3 guys in the top 5. Johnny Quinn jumped 6-0 for the win with Randy coming in 2nd (5-6) and David Wheatley 5th (5-0). The pole vault certainly had its excitement with Johnny Quinn leading the way. Clearing 15-5 at the league finals gave him another event championship and also broke an Academy League Record and school record for the event. “Johnny is just progressing so well in this event. To be the top vaulter in the county and the Southern Section (representing over 400 schools) is quite a statement about where he has come. It’s going to be an exciting championship portion of the season for him.” Also qualifying for CIF (his first such distinction in the event) is Justin Swanson. His 9-0 vault gave him a 2nd place finish and met the CIF height standard. Kevin Maghami, Tyler Stowers, and Sean Niu rounded out the great day in that event.

| | | Boys Golf | | | Tartan Track and Field Has Amazing Day at C.I.F. Prelims | In highly competitive CIF Division 4 competition, the Tartan Track and Field Athletes had outstanding days. “The athletic mindset that we like to strive towards is perfect for this type of competition. With an aim towards doing one’s very best and competing with the ‘I belong here’ attitude, each of the 22 kids who competed on Saturday made the coaches very proud.” In the distance events, many fine performances were turned in. Kylie Hunsaker became one of a handful of freshman in our school’s history to qualify for the CIF Finals. Her 1600 time of 5:24.43 seeds her 7th going into next week’s finals. Cody Tucker finished off a terrific running career here at St. Margaret’s with a 4:45.69 1600 race. Jais Tollette (2:32.95) and Sarah Verano (2:38.58) finished off their wonderful seasons in the 800. In the 3200 at the end of the day, Lauren Dunlop turned in a personal record run covering the distance in 12:13.45 and finished 12 overall in the division. “Lauren had a fantastic race. What’s exciting is that now she can see that she is in striking distance of qualifying for the CIF Finals in this event next year.” Kylie Hunsaker came in next with a time of 12:17.16. The hurdlers certainly stood out as each had fantastic days. Randy Rense ran a divisional best time of 15.42. “This certainly makes others from around the division take notice. He has set the standard and is in the hunt to win a CIF Championship.” He came back and ran an equally impressive 300 hurdle race (40.80) setting him up for next weeks finals in very good shape. Adrienne Baker was also a double event qualify for next week. Her 16.86 100 hurdle time qualified her 9th overall and 48.44 time she turned in the 300 hurdles qualifies her 8th. “Last year, she came into the finals in the 300 hurdles in a similar situation. There is no doubt that her best race is ready to come this weekend. She is a competitor; we’ve seen it so many times before from her.” Taylor Rutherford made her 1st C.I.F. Prelims race a good one as she ran a 17.47 and finished 14th overall.” The sprints and relays had wonderful days as well. Leading off the running events was the girls’ 4 X 100 relay consisting of Jaime Schiffer, Stephanie Davis, Adrienne Baker, and Jordan Meridith. The group had very good handoffs and ran a swift time of 53.30 (their fastest of the season). At the end of the day came the 4 X 400 relays. Sarah Verano, Adrienne Baker, Claire Pyott and Jordan Meridith ran a seasonal best time of 4:25.18 and finished 23rd overall. The boys’ 4 X 400 relay made things exciting as they broke the oldest standing school record in the books. Sean McArthur, Desmond Smith, Kenton Murray and Scott DeYoung blazed to a 3:34.45 setting a new standard for other St. Margaret’s relay teams to strive towards. They finished 15th overall and were only 4 seconds away from qualifying for the CIF Finals. Freshman Scott DeYoung had his best 400 race of the season (51.82) to qualify himself for the Finals next week. “He knew he had to have his best race on Saturday to at least put himself in contention to qualify. He did what he needed to do and we’re happy it worked out so well for him.” Jordan Meridith capped a tremendous track and field career here running in her final 400 meter race. Her time of 63.09 put her 23rd overall in the division. “As Jordan now graduates from the program, she’s accomplished so many things of which she should be very proud. Her coach certainly is proud of her 4 year career.” The field events certainly provided some excitement with the Tartan athletes turning in some fine performances. Johnny Quinn continues his season by qualifying in the pole vault. He leads the competition going into next week. Justin Swanson also had three great attempts and gained some valuable experience for the coming two years. Jais Tollette (7-0) and Merissa Ren each set a good tone and gained nice experience in the pole vault for the coming three years. Matt Furman had a personal best throw (124-3) in the discus and is now #2 on the St. Margaret’s all-time list and finished 11th overall. Kevin Maghami was right behind him in the 15th spot with a throw of 115-9. In the horizontal jumps, Stephanie Davis finished off what has been just an outstanding career. “I’ve become so used to having Stephanie lead and guide the team that it was a bit sad to see her leave the sand for the last time. She is a wonderful athlete and young lady.” Randy Rense and Tak Matsushita competed in the triple jump. Randy had a terrific showing leaping 41-4. “Any other year, that would probably qualify you for the finals. This is just one of those years where it came up just a bit short. Randy should certainly be very happy with this effort.” Tak Matsushita finished off a wonderful freshman year by competing at this high level meet. The experience gained from Saturday will serve him well in the coming three years. Next week’s CIF Finals will be at Cerritos College. Randy, Johnny, Adrienne are veterans to the meet as all three qualified last year as well. Now, they bring a bit more experience. Joining them are freshmen Kylie Hunsaker and Scott DeYoung who have made their mark on the program early.

Remember the Tartans! | | | V Girls Soccer | Winter | | Tartan Track and Field Girls Ready to Get Meet Portion of the Season Going | After a month of practice, the Tartan Girls are certainly ready to move to the next phase of the season. With a rain-out Saturday, there is certainly some excitement as they prepare to see just how good this team can be. However, the intensity, excitement, and work ethic is nothing short of amazing as this group gets set to kick off the season this Saturday at Katella. “This is the kind of team that just seems to be brimming with potential. There is a tremendous amount of experience from our returning girls to go along with what appears to be a solid, talented group of newcomers who can make an impact at the varsity level. Groups like this remind us of some of the top teams we’ve had over the years…we think this year’s team will be right up there with the best we’ve seen here.” Information on the upcoming meet (the Katella Relays at Huntington Beach High School) will be given to the athletes in the middle of the week. Leading the way in the distance events will be some key returnees from last year’s group. Lauren Dunlop, who came within 4 seconds of earning a CIF Finals spot in the 3200 last spring and had a terrific cross country season, will look to continue her greatness in the distance events. “She models the attitude and ethic that we love to see from athletes. There is a determination about her that is just so impressive.” Returning to Track and Field this year is standout Haley Hunsaker. After helping lead the girls’ cross-country team to the State Finals, and the girls’ soccer team to a CIF Championship, Haley will make quite an impact at the league level in her senior year. “Haley is a proven winner.” Kaitlin Moholy looks to make a nice move forward this year and will return to her specialty event, the 3200. Her senior track season could quite possibly be her best yet. Soccer standout Brittany Nemeth returns to the track to add some serious strength in the 800. Sophomore sensation Jais Tollette looks to continue what has been a wonderful running career here. After a year and half, she has made a name for herself as a top notch distance runner (and pole vaulter). “Jais is so tenacious. There is no quit in her and we love that attitude.” Daysey Arellano joins the distance crew for the first time in her sophomore year and will add nice depth to the 1600 and 3200. Freshmen newcomers Lauren Reiterman and Nasrin Garcia-Dzierwa will get their feet wet in the sport and could really make a nice impact over the course of the season. The hurdlers look to continue the tradition that has been set over the years. Coached by former league champion Omar Shaban and CIF Champion Jocelyn Parkinson, the group takes quite a bit of pride in their development. “This whole group just works so hard day in and day out. It’s gratifying to see them so prepared because they put a lot of work into perfecting their craft.” Leading the way will be junior standout Adrienne Baker. After coming off a tremendous soccer season, Adrienne looks to continue the progression she’s made in her track career. “Her 5th place finish in the 100 hurdles and 5th place finish in the 300 hurdles last season was so exciting. Good things happen to good people; this year, expect great things from Adrienne.” Making great strides this season are a few veterans who are going to most certainly join Adrienne as an elite hurdler at the league level and quite possible the CIF level. Senior Rebecca Courdy is leaps and bounds ahead of where she was last season at this point. “Rebecca just looks to be a little stronger this year in terms of endurance and aggressiveness. She’s attacking those hurdles already and seems to have a determination about her that is just so apparent.” Katharine McIntyre is in the same boat as Rebecca. “She looks stronger than ever and has demonstrated more confidence than we’ve seen from her.” Taylor Rutherford is the master technician and will continue to be this in her senior year. “It’s hard to believe that she’s a senior. It seems like just yesterday that she was going over the hurdles for the first time on the field by the gym. We knew then, just as we know now, that she is a top notch hurdler.” Taylor’s technical skill over the hurdles gives her leg up on much of the competition. Junior Sophia Lorenzi is looking great in the early season. “For Sophia, it’s like riding a bike. She just hopped into a practice and looked like she had been hurdling all year. In fact, she looks more technically sound and aggressive now than she did last year at the end of her short season.” Freshman Alex Simon and Sophomore Claire Pyott are also picking up the two hurdling events rather quickly. They’ll add some nice depth to a strong event group loaded with talent. “These two are all smiles out there. We are so happy that they not only work hard, but have fun doing it.” Rounding out the running events are a group of very nice, young sprinters. “We are pretty excited about the possibilities with this group.” Junior Lauren-Leigh Frum leads the way as she focuses in on the 100 and 200 this season. “The move from hurdles to sprints is going to be a good one for Lauren-Leigh and we couldn’t be more excited to have her set an example for the rest of the younger sprinters.” Three sophomores return from last year’s team and look to make nice improvements this season. League finalist Claire Pyott could certainly move up the charts as she develops endurance, speed, and confidence. “The work that she does with the hurdles will just add to the determination that she’ll need to continue to develop in the 400. We think she can make a nice impact at the league level in this event this season. If attitude has anything to do with it, she’s top notch.” In the shorter sprints will be Breanna Meece (200) and Melina Zuniga (100). These two look stronger this year and we think they can make nice improvements from their freshman year. Chayse Pake will be a nice addition to the sprinter/jumper crew who just seems to be a natural athlete. Rounding out a nice crew of sophomore sprinters is newcomer Sarika Tarsadia. “Sarika certainly looks impressive out there. She has a wonderful running form and just looks so smooth when she sprints. Without getting too specific, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her make a huge contribution to the team at the league level.” Freshman Sarah Fahim, Georgina Lean, and Lauren Dy are showing some nice early season promise. “As these three move through the course of the season, I’m sure they will show tremendous growth and improvement.” Each will focus in on the 100 in the early part of the season. Two other freshmen girls who will be pivotal members of the team this year (and the next four years) are Jane McGraw and Tasha Pavlovich. “These are the type of girls who you wouldn’t want to imagine the team without. During the winter, we didn’t know if they would be on the team. However, now that they are here, look out. Though they’ll make a nice impact at the league level this year, it’s pretty exciting to think about how they will develop over the next four years.” Right now, both are looking at the 100, 200 and 400. As they progress through the season, they’ll settle into two of these three events and also run a leg on the 4 X 100 relay. Speaking of relays, this year’s group looks pretty exciting. With Tasha and Jane at the front half, and Adrienne and Rebecca bringing it home, it could be quite a team. The field events can certainly be a source of strength for the girls. It the vertical jumps, quite a few of the girls will be top notch Academy league jumpers. Jais Tollette, Merissa Ren, and Lauren Johnson lead the way in the pole vault. “They provide nice leadership and experience for the rest of the girls. It’s a tough event, but they have the right outlook.” Senior Callan Smith will give the vault a shot this year to go along with a slew of other events for her. Joining these three are Christina Edwards, Olivia Saladino, Melina Zuniga, Tan-Tan Araya, and freshmen Katelyn Murray, Sareen Haddad and Jane McGraw. Over in the high jump, Lauren Dunlop again will lead a fine group of leapers. “This was a strong event for us last year. With the addition of Coach Quinn, the quality will just get better.” Rebecca Courdy and Adrienne Baker are known quantities in this event. The problem will be which events should each do. “This is a great problem to have. It just means that they are, simply put, tremendous athletes. We could probably put them in just about any event and they would be good. We’ll just have to wait and see which suits them the best.” Chase Lind was a quality high jumper in the Academy League last year and will look to be much the same this year. Christina Edwards has progressed wonderfully in all of her events. The high jump is one such event as she strives to be a top high jumper at the league level. “She’s just getting better and better each year.” Sophomores Sarah Grayden, Merissa Ren, and Melina Zuniga look to be off to a nice start to the season. All three will make a contribution to the team total in this event (to go along with their other events). Leaping into the sand pit in the horizontal jumps will be the typical cast of characters. Katherine McIntyre will be moving from track to field and will certainly do a terrific job in the long and triple jumps. Fellow senior Kristin Collier has already shown tremendous leadership with this group. “Kristin is a natural leader. We just love her work ethic and attitude.” Juniors Christina Edwards, Olivia Saladino, and Chase Lind had a nice conclusion to their season last year. They have all picked up right where they left off. “I’d expect some pretty solid performances from all three of these girls.” Joining this group of juniors is newcomer Milana Trimino. When Sarah Grayden and Merissa Ren aren’t doing all their other events, they’ll be making a nice impact in the sand. Undoubtedly, they’ll be league finals type performers by season end. Chayse Pake, Katelyn Murray and Sareen Haddad will compete well in these events also. The shot and discus is coming along just fine for the Tartans. Paige Selby, Annie Busch, and Lauren Johnson will continue to develop in the event. “There is a lot of technical work that needs to be put in place for improvement to be seen. This may just be a breakout year for all three of these girls.” Seniors Callan Smith and Brittany Nemeth will give the throwing events a go this spring as they strive to contribute to the overall team in any way possible. Freshman Sereen Haddad will also add some depth to the group. “The effort these girls put forth is great to see. We hope they can move up the ranks at the league level and put the girls’ throwing portion of the team on the map in the Academy League. Though the season is just one month old, it will be May before we know it. This group could really progress into something special. Only time will tell, but there is quite a bit of excitement in the air. | | | Track&Field | Spring | | Boys’ Track and Field Team Looks Strong | With some nice new additions to go along with an established core of veterans, the 2006 version of the St. Margaret’s Track and Field team looks exciting. “We never have as many guys on the team as some of the other schools in our league. However, we never let that take away from what is truly important to us. That is, how good of a team can we be by the season’s end? This kind of philosophy has served them well over the years.” The first showing will come this weekend at the Katella Relays. Then, our first league meet comes next on Wednesday, March 22. In the distance events, Cole Pavlovich looks very good after coming off of a tremendous cross country season which saw him finish 13th in the state at the Division 5 level. “The endurance and confidence alone is making a huge difference for him. He’s pretty much as good as they get in terms of working hard and making the most out of every practice. He’s going to have a terrific season.” Cole’s specialty may be the 3200 though he’ll be strong in the 1600 as well. Desmond Smith is bouncing back from a year that saw him help be a part of a school record setting 4 X 400 relay team. This year, he’ll also try his hand in the open 400. Chandler Moisen is off to a great start and is looking swift. Without a doubt, he will add some nice St. Margaret’s pride to the 800 and should be competitive at the league level. Sophomore newcomer Jonathan Drake is poised for a nice season in the distance events after having a terrific cross country season. “He showed quite a bit of determination during the fall. This has translated to much the same in the spring.” The hurdlers are new bunch of guys who are giving it a go for the first time. “There was a lot of untapped talent on this team and our sense is that the athleticism they some of these guys show in their other events could carry over to the hurdles.” One such athlete is all round standout Justin Swanson. “The speed he has developed and the body control he’s shown in the vault are ingredients for success in the hurdles.” It looks to be the case as he is coming along just fine in both the 110’s and the 300’s. Dan Goodenough and Nick Parrazzo are two upper classmen who have joined the team this year for the first time and will make an incredible impact. “Dan is the kind of athlete that could, quite literally, do just about any event well. It’s going to be tough to limit it down but we’ll get it ironed out as the season progresses.” Hurdles, however, look to be one of those key events. As for Nick, his focus looks to be the throwing events and the hurdles. “In both cases, he looks terrific.” In the sprints, last year’s cast of characters will lead the show with an influx of some nice, new talented athletes. CIF Finalist Scott DeYoung will continue his development in the 400 and 200 and should earn some nice points for the team total at the league level. Joining Scott will be Junior all-around standout Justin Swanson who adds the 4 X 100 and 100 to his slate of events. Senior Michael Martin makes his track debut and it should be exciting. In the throws and sprints, he’ll be competitive. Two freshmen who will, without a doubt, make a large contribution in anything ranging from the 400 to the 100 are Jose Narevez and Armando Manzano. “These two guys are competitive from the mental standpoint and have so much natural talent. Over the course of four years, they will be key members of this team.” Jose will join Justin Swanson, Michael Martin, and Dan Goodenough on the 4 X 100 relay team which looks quite promising. In the field, the Tartans look to really assert themselves. “This part of the program is very strong. It just feels like every field event venue that we turn, we some guys on this team working hard and looking very impressive. The returnees who we know about are one thing and a constant. It’s the new guys that will add tremendous depth that impresses us.” The High Jump looks promising with veterans David Wheatley, Tak Matsushita and Johnny Quinn. All three could quite potentially be League Finalists in this one. Two newcomers who will certainly turn heads quickly are Dan Goodenough and Justin Martos. “These two juniors are so talented in so many ways. In Justin’s case, the High Jump that goes along with his Pole Vaulting will be a terrific combination. As for Dan, it’s just a matter of choosing his four best events. He’s so talented we are just trying to get a read on this right now. High Jump will certainly be one of them.” The Pole Vault continues to be a bright spot as more and more of the guys are getting more and more competitive at the CIF level. Besides CIF Champion and State Finalist Johnny Quinn (who is ranked in the top 10 at the state level), we should see some nice marks from Justin Swanson and Justin Martos. “They’ve been working hard to get better and it’s really starting to show. It sure would be fun to have three guys shooting for CIF Finals qualification.” In the long and triple, it’s pretty much the same names and faces as in every event. “What is extraordinary about this team is that so many guys do so many things. Nobody is pigeonholed into one event or the other. Rather, their enthusiasm carries them into a multitude of events. That’s what the sport is all about.” In the long jump and triple jump, we’ll see Michael Martin, Justin Swanson, Michael Martin, Justin Swanson, David Wheatley, Scott DeYoung, Sean Dreyer, Tak Matsushita, and Armando Manzano round out a fine group. “There is no telling what this group of guys can accomplish. However, it’s evident that they all will make a nice contribution in this event and all the others we’ve already mentioned.” Many of these guys were League Finalists last year and will hopefully carry that into the 2006 season. Look out for this year’s group of throwers as they just keep getting better and better. Leading the way will be senior standouts Matt Furman and Kevin Maghami. “These guys had breakout years last year and it looks as though they’ve just continued that momentum into this year. I’d expect to see some marks above and beyond the great ones they achieved last year.” Geoff Wilson has made great improvements in both the shot and the disc. Much of this is attributed to strength that he’s developed with all the off-season weight training.” Michael Martin and Nick Parrazzo are adding this to their slew of events as well. Adding to the strength of this event is veteran Doug Lunn. “Doug was so much stronger last season and it sounds like he’s making even more improvements this year.” To go along with all these seniors are a couple younger throwers. Elmer Flores is back for a repeat performance from last year. As the season came to an end, he was really hitting his stride in these two events. We predict much the same improvement this year. Rounding out the terrific throwing group are freshmen Stephan Toubia and Jose Navarez. “All in all, this is a very competitive group who will make major contributions to the overall team performance. We couldn’t be more excited with the group of guys we have holding down the fort in the shot put and discus rings.” As we move through the season, we will get an accurate picture of just how good this boys’ team will be. However, from the looks of things at practice, it should be impressive. We are pretty excited about what they can become throughout the course of the season.
