All-Star Leslie McDonald
Leslie McDonald was selected by a committee of media and coaches to participate in the 2008 31st Annual Orange County High School Volleyball All-Star Games. The player history of this event reads like a Who's Who of Volleyball including Olympic Gold Medalist Misty May, NCAA Player of the year Brent Hillard, Olympic Gold Medalists Dain Blanton and Steve Timmons. Only 14 seniors were chosen to play on each of the South County and North County teams. Leslie played Libero for the South County team representing St. Margaret’s well in the victory.  She led her team to a 25-21, 17-25, 15-10 win over the North County team which was played at Newport Harbor High School.  Leslie finished her volleyball career at St. Margaret’s as the Academy League MVP, a First Team All-CIF member and a CIF State Scholar Athlete.  Congratulations Leslie, on a great career.V Girls VolleyballUpper
Tain Lee All-County Golfer
As a senior, Tain Lee has some distinct goals entering into the Boys Golf Season in February. First, he and Senior Co-Captains Andy Ellison and Grant Reindl wanted to run the table again in League. They wanted to be undefeated and lead St. Margaret’s to its seventh consecutive Boys Academy League Golf Title.

Second, Tain wanted the team to have an extremely difficult pre-season, so early in December the Captains asked Coach Parker to set up some difficult matches on some very challenging courses against some of the best teams in Orange County. Coach Parker took up their challenge and scheduled matches against the defending State Champion Edison, perennial golf powerhouses Tesoro, Peninsula, Servite, Mission Viejo, and Huntington Beach. Each of these teams were ranked in the OC Register top ten golf schools in Orange County.
Finally Tain wanted to return the MVP in Boys Golf to St. Margaret’s where it had resided for five of the first sixth years. Some lofty goals for the Boys Golf program and for Tain Lee personally.

The boys ended with a record of 13-7 and 10-0 in league play with wins over Peninsula and Mission Viejo. They played extremely competitive against Huntington Beach but lost by two strokes. Tain finished with a stroke average of 35.3 for the season including 3 eagles and 23 birdies. His low round of the year was an amazing 31 at Dad Miller. Heading into the league championship Tain was in fine form shooting 66 at the League Preliminaries at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course and 76 at El Niguel in blustery condition to finished 2 under par for 36 holes. With these two scores, Tain Lee became the first player in League history to repeat as the league Champion

At the Team Sectional the team was pumped to make a run at another CIF-SS Divisional Championship. But the cold and rainy conditions at Talega made it a most difficult day for scoring and the Tartans finished 9th with Tain shooting the second best round of the tournament at level par 72.
Individually three Tartans advanced to the CIF-SS Sectional at the challenging Seacliffs Country Club in Huntington Beach.  But only Tain Lee survived the difficult pin placements and lighting fast greens to advance to the CIF-SS Individual Finals at Mission Lakes in Palm Desert California. At the Individual Finals Tain Lee finished fifth shooting a level par round of 71 in 40 knot winds and 112® temperatures. Consuming some 12 bottles of water during his round, Tain stayed focused and birdied three out of his last sixth holes. With his 5th place finish, Tain became only the third Boy Golfer in Tartan history to advance to the Southern California Golf Association Championship joining Tyler Smith and Matt Pierce.

Although Tain was disappointed with his showing at the SCGA- he wanted to be the first Tartan to reach the State Finals- he had an amazing golf career at St. Margaret’s earning 1st Team All League Honors four times, winning the League Individual Championship twice, and being named to the Register’s 1st Team All Orange County Boys Golf Team in 2008.

Tak in CIF Finals
Tak Matsushita Track & Field Long Jump CIF Finalist

Tartan track Senior Tak Matsushita will look to make school history this Saturday at Mt. Sac College, as he’ll be competing in the boys CIF Division IV Long Jump Final.  Last Saturday, Matsushita jumped an amazing 21’1’’ at the Division IV Prelims in Carpintaria, which was the second longest jump in school.  Matsushita was just as surprised as excited.  “Throughout my whole track career I never expected that I would go to CIF Finals, but now that I am I want to give it my all and I’m going to pound it on Saturday.”  Matsushita is currently ranked 7th overall among Division IV jumpers heading into Saturday’s Final, and is only the second Tartan Boys long jumper to qualify for CIF Finals in school history.  The last to do so was Damian Raibon in 1995, who jumped a school record 22’7’’.  The Southern Section long jump finals will get underway at 11 am on Saturday morning.

G LAX Wins Southern Section Championship
St. Margaret's first to wear Southern Section crown

Ciccomascolo scores six goals in girls lacrosse title game.

By DAMIAN CALHOUN
OCVarsity.com

St. Margaret’s senior Lauren Ciccomascolo put the finishing touches on her high school lacrosse career in Friday’s Southern Section championship at Trabuco Hills High.

She scored six goals and assisted on another to lead the Tartans to a 16-8 victory over Palos Verdes for the first girls section title.

Ciccomascolo was selected MVP of the championships.

“She was amazing,” St. Margaret’s coach Summer Crabtree said of Ciccomascolo. “She played the best that I’ve ever seen her play.”

Ciccomascolo, who will attend Denver University, set the tone early for the Tartans when she scored 11 seconds into the contest.

“We usually pass off of the first draw control,” Ciccomascolo said. “But it (an opening) was there and I took it.”

Ciccomascolo scored three of her goals in the first half as the Tartans took a 9-5 lead into halftime.

“I wanted to come out and make it a game to remember,” Ciccomascolo said. “Going to Denver next year, I wanted to remember this and take it with me.”

The Sea Kings managed to get to within 10-7 with 21:44 remaining in the second half. However, the Tartans responded with five consecutive goals to seal the victory.

“We didn’t actually know what to expect from this team (Palos Verdes),” Crabtree said. “Our goal was to play as hard as we could and try not to make any mistakes and capitalize on their mistakes.

“We got into a rhythm in the second half. When we start playing at our own pace, that’s when we score goals.”

Ciccomascolo scored twice, Jackie Marloe and Ashley Bean once each to give the Tartans a 15-7 lead with 9:53 remaining.

Congratulations to ALL who participated in 2008's Pacific Teams Tryouts!!

4/28/08: The 2 teams were decided last weekend at the Cate School, where the 40 advancing players from the 4/20 Chapter tryouts (North and South) completed a series of drills and activities and were rated anew by a new team of selectors. It was incredibly hot and the girls worked unbelievably hard though each and every task. The scored were then tabulated and the results were sent to the players via email, and the rosters were "announced" by way of their tryout number. This is how we will announce finalists at all of our trytous from now on...

Please congratulate each and every one of your nominees who participated in the tryout process. There were (and are EVERY year) many beautiful, talented players that don't make it past the 1st cut at the Chapter tryouts. It is important to remind them that a) they were nominated in the first place and are therefore legitimate b) anyone can have a brilliant tryout, and anyone can have an off-day c) it has 100% nothing to do with a player's track record or resume. No details are known about any of the players, since it is all anonymous by design.

Some numbers to consider:

Over  32 schools/programs nominated players for the Northern CA Chapter tryouts at Menlo School
Over 112 players were nominated (no more than 6 from any one).

Over 25 schools/programs nominated players for the San Diego, Greater LA and Orange County Chapters (combined)
Southern Tryouts at Poway School.
Over 111 players were nominated (no more than 6 from any one)

Between the two tryouts on 4/20 and 4/27:
• 20 different people served as selectors
• 3 trainers and 3 officials worked at each of the tryouts
• 6 different people served as facilitators for the tryouts
• 240 tryout pinnies had numbers pinned to them, and now need to be washed!
• 4 student volunteers helped with equipment, data entry and site clean-up
• 1 husband designed a brilliant spreadsheet to tally all of the scores (factoring in the drop of the highest and lowest scores received)
• numerous coaches joined (or renewed) US Lacrosse in order to nominate players for the tryouts
• countless girls joined US Lacrosse in order to register for the tryouts
• many, many balls and cones were borrowed and not too many lost
• most of the players listed above competed for a combined total of 8 hours to earn their spot on Team 1 or 2
• 6 players have previous Pacific Team playing experience (2007 rosters and even 2006)
• 22 juniors, 15 sophomores and 3 frosh make up the 40 players' different grades.
• 2 juniors and 2 sophomores are the Alternates
• 29 different high schools/programs contribute to the 40 players/4 alternates named to the 2008 teams (possibly the most ever; I'd have to check)
Thank you to EVERYONE who offered their TIME in all areas, especially as selectors and facilitators, and brain cells to assess the hundreds of candidates, loaner balls & cones, fields for tryouts, brainstorming to make sure tryouts plans were in full compliance with CIF, bouncers to keep the tryouts closed to the public, Etc, etc. It was a great lax team effort.

The above listed rosters represent our emerging California talent and we are confident that they will once again make us all proud as they
compete on the National stage at WDNT this Memorial Day weekend.

Please wish Both teams all luck in Baltimore, and we will let you know how they fare in each of their divisions.

Thanks also to ALL of the coaches who have joined or renewed US Lacrosse as coach members, and who abided by the deadlines and formats I requested for the nomination process. Also, thank you, again, to all of the amazing Pacific Coach applicants we had this year. Hopefully if (when) we advance to 3 teams next year we will be able to use more of you!!

Best regards,
Jen Lee

Senior Girls’ Lace It Up One More Time!
Sarah Grayden, Lauren Ciccomascollo and Paige Selby thought they had hung up their basketball sneakers for good in this past season’s CIF quarter final game. Low and behold the three of them had to dust off their Adidas’s for one more game as they were selected to play in the Plyo-City Small School All Star Showcase. Representing St. Margaret’s for the South Team along with other players from areas schools, the team went out and battled tough against the North squad making it a competitive and fun event. Not only did our three Tartans play well, each earned some well deserved honors. Paige Selby was distinguished as having the highest G.P.A on the South Squad. Lauren Ciccomascollo was presented with one of the M.V.P awards for her outstanding play in the game. At the Showcase Banquet held the Tuesday night preceding the game, Sarah Grayden was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the South Team for her efforts this past season. Tartan Volleyball Wins Chadwick Tournament!
The varsity volleyball team had a great win on Saturday, besting some of the better teams in the division to win the Chadwick Tourney.  The Tartans started slowly in pool play, going 4-2.  Both of their losses came at the hands of well-balanced Laguna Blanca team.  Placing 2nd in the pool, the team played Pacifica Christian in the 1st round of playoffs.  Those watching the game noticed a difference in the team, playing with a renewed intensity that led to a 25-12 victory.  In the semifinals, the Tartans played Chadwick, the 4th ranked team in Division V.  The game was a back and forth battle until Chadwick poured it on to take a 18-23 lead.  Coming out of a timeout, the Tartans showed the resiliency that their coaches have been desiring to see, scoring seven unanswered points to win the game 25-23.  In the finals, the Tartans were matched up against Laguna Blanca.  Building off the momentum gained in the match against Chadwick, the Tartans rolled to a 25-13 victory to win the game and the tournament.  While everyone contributed to the days' success, sophomores Kory Kiraly and Woody Quinn were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Woody earning MVP honors.  The Tartans look to continue their success this next week in their two league matches and non-league match Wednesday at home versus Laguna Beach, the 5th ranked team in all of Orange County.V Boys VolleyballUpper

Tartan Lacrosse has Great Win!
MD-SoCAL BOYS: St. Margaret's Episcopal Upsets Mount St. Joseph, 8-7

Junior middie Connor Edgcomb scored the game-winning goal with 1:09 remaining in regulation to give St. Margaret's Episcopal a stunning, come-from-behind, 8-7 victory over Mount St. Joseph in a Southern California vs. Maryland interstate game Friday afternoon.

Edgcomb scored his only goal of the game after rolling around from X, dodging two defenders and throwing in what stood up to be the clincher from point-blank range to give the Tartans (5-1) their fourth straight win.

Senior attackman Max Sutro finished with a game-high five points on three goals and two assists, junior attackman Mark Aghajanian added four points on two goals and two assists and sophomore goalie Jeff Askin saved 18 shots for St. Margaret's, which rallied to score the game's final three goals after trailing by two with less than four minutes remaining.

Senior middie Dorian Farhang added a goal and an assist, and junior middie Brad Smith scored once for St. Margaret's.

In a losing effort, Dominic Serio had a team-high four points on three goals and an assist for Mount St. Joseph (4-2), which had its three-game winning streak snapped. The Gaels, who play in the powerful Maryland Interstate Athletic Association, were playing the second game of a three-game Southern California road trip.

On Thursday, Mount St. Joseph downed Rancho Bernardo, 14-4, and the Gaels will next face unbeaten Corona del Mar on Saturday.

In Friday's game, the Gaels led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, 4-3 at halftime, 5-4 at the end of the third quarter and 7-5 with less than four minutes to play in regulation.

But St. Margaret's came back, as Aghajanian started the comeback when he scored with 3:50 to play to bring the Tartans within a goal. Smith scored his only goal of the game to draw St. Margaret's even with 2:06 remaining and set the stage for Edgcomb's heroics.

Afterward, St. Margaret's assistant coach Bryan Harney called it one of the top three wins in the program's history.

"We just played scrappy," Harney said. "We became aggressive on the ground balls, our defense really kept us alive and our clears really started to click in the second half."

He’s tanned, rested and ready.
Volleyball icon Karch Kiraly was nominated for the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame and fans can help vote him in this month.  Kiraly, of San Clemente, retired last year as the game’s greatest player with more victories, more prize money, awards and accolades than any other player.  In Olympic competition, he is the sport’s only player to win three gold medals.  The first two came indoors with the U.S. team in 1984 and 1988, but he and partner Kent Steffes won the first gold awarded for beach volleyball at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
The U.S. Olympic Committee is inviting fans to vote for Kiraly at www.usolympichalloffame.com through March 28.
Kiraly now coaches the St. Margaret’s volleyball team in San Juan Capistrano.  He also launched the amateur national championship-the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball-in Huntington Beach last summer.  Six individual Olympians, one Olympic team and one Paralympian, along with a coach, a veteran and a special contributor, will be honored during the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony June 19 in Chicago.
If inducted, he will join other great Olympians such as Cassius Clay, Mark Spitz, Jim Thorpe, Jesse Owens, Sugar Ray Leonard, Carl Lewis, Peggy Fleming, Mary Lou Retton and the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” Hockey Team.

Boys Basketball Plays well in Santa Barbara Classic
The Boys Basketball team had a great experience in the Santa Barbara Holiday Classic, winning twice and losing twice against larger schools.  As the tournament wore on, the team’s commitment to the defensive side of the game improved as did their dominance of the boards.  Kevin Wang and Harley Frost continued to impress defensively as well as gain confidence offensively.  5 different players drew charges in the four games.  Tyler Stowers continues to lead the team in scoring at 17ppg, doing the same again at Santa Barbara.  Daniel Morrison’s play on the defensive side and on the offensive boards was a major factor in each game.  When not playing basketball, the trip included three nights of playing cards, some beach volleyball, Jacuzzi runs at the hotel, team meals at local Santa Barbara restaurants, and lots of time relaxing together.  Thanks to all who came to be a part of it and give support to the boys.V Boys BasketballUpper

Sophomore, Kiyana Salkeld, ran an outstanding time of 20:54 followed by Lauren Reiterman in 21:05, Daysy Arellano in 21:12 and Jais Tollette, who was hampered by injury the entire season, ran an impressive 22:36. Tartan Boys Win Academy League Cup
Each year the Academy League recognizes the school that has the most successful sports program throughout the school year.   Each school earns points by the place they finish in league.  If there are 6 schools in a league and your school comes in first place, you would earn six points.   If your team came in second place, your school would earn 5 points, and so on.  We competed in 10 different sports and earned a total of 48 points.  That is an average score of 4.8.  Our boys’ teams earned 5 League Championships and 2 second place finishes.  The Tartans nudged out Sage Hill who earned 47 points and an average of 4.7 points.

Our girls’ teams also performed extremely well and were able to place second overall.   We placed first in 5 sports and second in 2.  The girls’ teams earned a total of 36 points.

Congratulations to all who contributed so much to help Tartan Athletics succeed.

Tartans win Sportsmanship Award
St. Margaret’s Athletic Program was recognized by the Academy League for having Outstanding Sportsmanship.   Each season, all head coaches, from every school, rank their opponents for their sportsmanship.   Over the course of the year, St. Margaret’s earned 122 points.   That number, when divided by the number of sports (19) in which we compete, gave us an average score 6.42 and that earned us the first place crown.    Capistrano Valley Christian earned second place honors with 83 points with an average of 5.93.

Thank you to all Tartan Athletes and Coaches for representing us so well.     You have worked very hard for this Outstanding Sportsmanship Award and I am very proud of you.

The Pacific region includes all of California, Hawaii and Nevada and sent two teams of 20 on an A and a B team to compete against other high school lacrosse players from all over the country. The tournament began in 1933 and has grown to become one of the largest women’s lacrosse events in the country. The tournament highlights include playing with the best of the best high school players from around the country, a senior all-star game, a U.S. Team exhibition and it is considered a premier recruiting opportunity for the high school players.

Swimmers Bring Home 3 Titles
GIRLS SWIMMING ROLLS TO THREE CIF TITLES
The Tartan swim teams competed at the CIF Division IV Finals Thursday evening.  For the girls, it was the cap on a tremendous season with their second 3rd place finish in four years.  For the boys, the future is bright with two swimmers swimming three events in finals.

The #1 ranked 200 Medley Relay of seniors Hannah Ng, Oriana Poindexter, Sylvia Zaich and sophomore Cristina Poindexter lowered their own school record for the 3rd time in a week and crushed the entire field by 1.3 seconds in winning in 1:55.31.  There was no weak spot for the Tartans: Hannah had the 3rd fastest backstroke split of the meet, Oriana and Sylvia the fastest breast and fly splits, and Cristina pulled out a body-length lead that we never gave up.  This relay has qualified for the CIF Masters Meet next Tuesday where the fastest 24 times from all four CIF divisions compete head-to-head.

Individually, Oriana Poindexter successfully defended her two CIF titles in the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle and will also be competing at the Masters Meet next week.  Winning each in much differerent style, she came from behind on the last lap to win the breast and lead from the start of the 500 missing her own school record by less than three seconds.

Adding to the point total with individual races were Sylvia, Hannah, and Cristina.  Sylvia came back from having to sit out much of last season to finish a strong 4th in the 100 breast and 13th in the 100 butterfly.  Hannah swimming in outside lanes came from 16th seed to finish 13th in the 50 free and 14th to finish 12th in the 100 backstroke breaking her own school record by 1 second.  Both were lifetime best swims! Finally, after swimming the Medley Relay only 5 minutes earlier, Cristina battled to her 2nd best time of the season in the 200 free for 16th.

The foursome teamed up for the 400 free relay and blazed to a 3:51.52, more than 2 seconds under their school record for a strong 5th place finish.

The boys were led by freshman sensation Spenser Goodman who zipped to a 1:45.84 for 3rd place after being in 6th with 50 yards to go.  He came back to swim a 4:44.69 500 free good for 4th place.  In the same race, Jeff Carpenter completed his finest season yet with a 5:10.00 for 15th place.

In prelims, the girls had great swims from their 200 free relay of Kasey Jong, Kristie Austin, Carina Prynn, and Alex Moyzis who raced to the team's second fastest time of the season.  Carina also swam to a 26th place in the 100 breaststroke and Cristina just missed finalling in the 100 free with a 18th place finish.
On the boys side, Greg Wu, William Sammons, Spenser and Jeff broke the school record in the 200 free relay taking 26th place.  Jeff cut 3 seconds off of his 200 free to finish 17th.

The Masters Meet is Tuesday, May 14 at 5pm at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Tartans Win Back to Back League Titles
Completing their first undefeated season ever, the girls swim team won 5 events, broke two Academy League records, and generally had their way with the competition at the league finals this week.  The Tartans, who last year beat Whitney for the title by one point on the last relay, led from start to finish in earning 175 points to Whitney's 144.  Oxford had 110 and Sage 88.  The young and undermanned boys finished with 48 points but won two individual titles and four boys swam to 6 top-8 finishes.

The seniors led the way for the Tartans.  Oriana Poindexter won the 500 free-100 breast combo for the second year in a row and finished her Academy League Finals career undefeated in 6 individual events in three years.

Sylvia Zaich was 2nd in the 100 fly and 3rd in the 50 free, Hannah Ng, 3rd in the 100 back, 4th in the 50 free and Irene Tung was 7th in the 500 free (only her fourth 500 ever).

The Medley Relay of Hannah, Oriana, Sylvia and Cristina Poindexter won setting a new school and Academy League record shattering the 2 minute mark at 1:58.02.  The 400 free relay of Hannah, Oriana, Cristina and Alex Moyzis also set a new Academy League mark and broke 4 minutes at 3:57.5.

Support came from all directions for the girls: Cristina Poindexter won the 200 for the second year in a row and was barely touched out for the win in the 100, setting a personal best in that race.  Marni Thomas (7th-200, 6th-500), Kristie Austin (8th-100 fly, 50 free), Alex Moyzis (5th-100 back, 100 free), Kasey Jong (7th-200 IM, 6th-100 free), Jenna Berman (6th-200 free), Kelsey Bleiweiss (4th-200, 7th-100 breast) and Carina Prynn who overcame a nasty allergic reaction to a bee sting (6th-200 IM, 5th-100 breast) all battled for every yard in helping the Tartan cause.

Chipping in big points on relays included the B medley of Alex, Carina, Kristie, Kasey (5th), the A 200 free of Sylvia, Carina, Kristie, Kasey (2nd), the B 200 free of Kelsey, Irene, Marni, and Kelly Knutsen (a huge 4th place), and the B 400 free of Jenna, Marni, Irene, Kelly (5th). Swimming to strong efforts in prelims were Michelle Adler (100 back-lifetime best), Karine Kofdarali (50 free-11th) and Claire Hosinski (100 free-11th).

For the boys, birthday boy Spenser Goodman left an indelible mark on the meet with tremendous swims in the 200-500 freestyles.  He took both out very quickly and never let up winning each in league record time (1:46.98 and 4:50.35).  The 200 was also a school record by almost 2 full seconds.

The boys 200 free relay of Spenser, Jeff, William Sammons, and Greg Wu also qualified for CIF in breaking a school record (1:38.89).   The same foursome was 5th in the 200 medley relay anchored by William's amazing 24.8 split.  The B 200 and 400 free relays of Nick, Will Findiesen, Kevin Strong, and Cole Saladino also established season best times for the group.

Sammons moved up to 7th in the 100 back in his final ever Academy League race (1:09.8) and Wu was 8th in the 100 fly (1:05.7) for a lifetime best.  Carpenter had strong swims in the 200 (1:58.1-4th) and 500 (5:19-4th) to help the Tartan cause.  Nick led of the 400 free relay in a stunning 56.7 dropping 2 seconds from his best time and earn the 5th fastest time ever in that race for a Tartan.

9 girls and 5 boys have earned trips to the CIF Championships starting next Tuesday at Belmont Plaza pool.  The girls are expected to contend for as many as 4 CIF titles and a team finish in the top-4, while the boys are looking to Spenser to carry on the CIF title tradition while sneaking Jeff Carpenter and at least two of their relays into the top-16.

Congratulations to ALL of the Tartans for representing your school and this program so well.  Your coaches are very proud of you.

Harry Welch Named Head Football Coach
Headmaster Marcus D. Hurlbut announced Wednesday that Harry Welch will join the St. Margaret’s Episcopal School faculty as an English teacher and Head Varsity Football coach for the 2007-2008 school year.  Welch, who last week resigned as the football coach at Canyon High School in Santa Clarita, will join the faculty on July 1, 2007.  He has been a coach for 33 years, including the past 18 at Canyon High School.  In those 18 years, Welch amassed a record of 179-46-2 including a 46-game winning streak, five CIF titles, and the Division I CIF State Football Championship in 2006. Last month, Welch was named Coach of the Year by the California Coaches Association (CCA), comprising high school, college, and NFL coaches. Welch will receive the award at the California Coaches Association ceremony on June 16 at the Irvine Hilton.

“St. Margaret’s is extremely proud to welcome an educator and a football coach of Harry Welch’s reputation and caliber,” said St. Margaret’s Headmaster Marcus Hurlbut. “He is one of the best high school coaches in the nation and an outstanding English teacher, and we look forward to welcoming Harry and his wife Cindee to our school community.”  Cindee Welch, an experienced educator, will also be joining the St. Margaret’s faculty as a counselor and teacher in the fall of 2007.

“My wife, Cindee, and I feel so honored and privileged to be joining the St. Margaret’s community,” said Welch who plans to relocate to the south Orange County area this summer. “During our recent visits to the campus, we fell in love with the St. Margaret’s students, faculty and staff.  We are also thrilled with the school’s proximity to our two daughters and five grandchildren who live in Mission Viejo and San Diego.”

St. Margaret’s high school athletic program includes 22 interscholastic sports and has attained 126 Academy League championships since 1982.  The emphasis at St. Margaret’s is on participation with more than 80 percent of the high school students involved in CIF athletics.

St. Margaret’s football is in the CIF Southern Section Division XIII.  The school’s 44-member varsity football team won the CIF championship in 2006 becoming the only high school football team in Orange County to post an undefeated, 14-0 season.  The Tartan football program has won 11 league championships in the past 20 years.

“We are very pleased to have an outstanding teacher and coach with a wealth of experience and a proven record of success join our coaching staff,” said St. Margaret’s Athletic Director Susie Maga, a 13-year member of the school’s faculty and coaching staff.  “Coach Welch will surely continue the strong Tartan football tradition that has been established here at St. Margaret’s.”

Swimming has Great Day!
TARTANS ROLL AT DIVISION II PASADENA POLY The Tartan swimmers headed to LA County and heated things up on Saturday. The girls varsity won 10 of 11 events, earned two new CIF qualifying times, set two pool records, and generally had the run of the place! Oriana Poindexter (500 free, 100 breast) won two events, setting pool records in both and Sylvia Zaich (50 free, 100 fly), Carina Prynn (200 IM), Hannah Ng (100 back), and Cristina Poindexter (200 free) each took gold for the Tartans. The one race we didn't win was the 100 freestyle in which Cristina Poindexter swam stroke for stroke with the Poly swimmer and though touched out by a mere 1/10th of a second, she was able to get her first CIF cut in the race! The relays were dominant earning 1-2 sweeps in the Medley (Hannah, Oriana, Sylvia, and Carina getting their season best at 2:01.7 & and Alex Moyzis, Irene Tung, Kristie Austin, and Kelly Knutsen at 2:18.36) and 400 Free (Hannah, Kasey Jung, Alex, Oriana 4:13.2 & Kristie, Marni, Irene, Kelly 4:32.6). Zaich, Austin, Jung and Prynn also won the 200 Free relay. For the boys, the award for breakthrough swimmer of the meet goes to senior, William Sammons. Will won the first race of his career in taking the 100 free and swam a lifetime best 100 back (1:13) for third. Jeff Carpenter won both the 200 and 500 frees missing CIF in the latter by only 1.2 seconds. Swimming&DivingUpper
Tartan Track Breaks Record
The Tartan Track and Field team wasn’t more than five minutes into their 2007 season and a school record had already been broken.  The Boys’ 4 X 100 relay team, which incidentally broke the school record in that event on their last race of the season in 2006 at the CIF Prelims and came just fractions of a second from qualifying for the CIF finals, sent a strong message to the rest of the CIF Division 4 that they are ready to get the baton around the track quickly.  “The key to a good relay is good exchanges.  The fastest four guys don’t always win the race.  This year, it looks like we not only have four very fast boys on the team, but they seem to mesh well in terms of getting along, believing in each other, and exchanging the baton well.”  All good relays need a strong leader at the beginning.  Justin Swanson provides just that as this is his fourth year running a leg on the relay.  “He sets the tone for the entire race and it’s always good.”  Armando Manzano (who has the school record written on the inside of his shoe) takes his 11.4 100 speed down the stretch in a strong second leg.  At that point, it’s all about the handoffs because it’s very possible that the boys are in the lead after two legs.  Jose Nevarez, who has proven to be a standout 400 and 800 runner, runs the curve well and hands the baton off to senior newcomer John Chapman.  “There aren’t many guys out there that will catch John.  So it’s comforting to know that if we have the lead, there is a good chance that John will hold it through the finish line.”  To run that fast this early is a nice testament to what this group of guys can do this season.  These boys are in a good position to do some nice things in this event over the course of the season.

OC Assist Record Broken
The Orange County Record for Career Assists by a high school boys basketball player up until Friday night was held by Eric Palmer of Irvine University H.S. who between 1994 and 1998 had 889 Career Assists.  Needing only 5 assists to break the record in a 2nd Round CIF Playoff game against Arroyo High School, Corey Fava found Harley Frost and Kevin Wang early in the first quarter for two Pick and Roll layups.

In the 2nd Quarter of the game, Corey got #890 when Tyler Stowers cut backdoor to finish a power layup because he found himself denied  by an Arroyo defender at 3 point line.   Corey finished the game with 8 points and 10 Assists, along with 3 steals in a 75-42 victory.

He is now 3rd all-time in assists for the State of California behind Jason Kidd currently playing for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and Jacque Vaughn of the San Antonio Spurs.

In his 4 years as a high school player, Corey has averaged 8.95 assists in the 100 games that he has played in, all of them as the starting point guard for the Tartans.  His teams have had an impressive record of 79-25 during that span of play and have won four Academy League titles.  Most importantly the teams have been characterized by players who have shown strong character and are committed to team play.  Our school is proud of his accomplishment and we want to offer congratulations for years of commitment and outstanding team play to Corey Fava and his many teammates who share in each assist and to his coaches past and present.

Basketball Great Ann Meyers Visits
On Tuesday January 23rd Ann Meyers Drysdale visited St. Margaret’s and spoke to the Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams.  Ken Colbaugh a member of the Board of Trustees extended her the invitation.  She is full of passion for all that she does and is truly a very gifted and inspirational person.  Her personality definitely reflects her many accomplishments.  Ann talked to the players about the importance of having courage and passion for everything they do.  She emphasized how important it was to practice like you play, to be enthusiastic in all your efforts and to truly enjoy the sport.  Ann told us how she and her 5 brothers and 5 sisters never played sports to get a scholarship they did it for the love of the game.  You can look in Ann’s eyes and know that she still has a love for the game.  She told a great story about how she and her brother David wanted to be high jumpers in the Olympics and how they would haul their bed mattresses down the stairs and stack them up and then jump over chairs on them.  She told us that everybody needs to have a dream and to pursue it.  She also reminded us that everybody has a special gift and they need to nurture it and share it with others.  Finally she told us that you can never be afraid to fail.  It is a part of life and a part of any sport.  She quoted Winston Churchill  "Success is not final, failure is not fatal; it is the courage to continue that counts."

A few of Ann Meyers accomplishments:

She was a four-year high school All American

The first high school player ever to make a United State National Team

The first woman to receive a university full athletic scholarship—UCLA

The first male or female to become a four time college All-American

The first player drafted in the Women’s Professional Basketball League

The first and only woman to sign a free agent contract with an NBA Team

Hall of Fame in:  International Women’s Sports  UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame  Professional Basketball Hall of Fame  National High School Hall of Fame

Also a top analyst on ESPN, NBC and CBS

Recently accepted the positions of General Manger of the Woman’s National Basketball Association Phoenix Mercury and Vice President of the men’s NBA Phoenix Suns

Notes & Highlights: We breathed a sigh of relief when finding out that St. Margaret's had edged Maranatha, 21-20, in the CIFSS Northeast Division final. The Tartans capped a 14-0 season and became an obvious choice to be the 2006 Division V State Team of the Year. If they had gotten upset, we honestly didn't know who we'd have put in the final top spot. Down 14-0, St. Margaret's took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter on a one-yard sneak by QB Cameron Hiller. This came after Hiller had completed a 42-yard pass to Hunter Steffien. Maranatha scored on a 14-yard run by Chaz Fuery with 2:42 left, but missed the extra point. Congratulations to head coach Jason Hitchens and all of the players for your outstanding season. This is the first time St. Margaret's has been No. 1 in the state for its division in our rankings...

Wrestlings Inaugural Match
Coach Leneau and the Wrestling team won their first match ever over Sherman Indian High School 54 to 18. St. Margaret's never had a wrestling program until last year, when the school made the decision to join the CIF in 2005. Their first event of the season was held in the Campaigne Center Tuesday evening at 5pm. Their 1st ever wrestling match in schools history brought some outstanding numbers for a first year program. One member of the faculty was quoted "There were more people here today than at the volleyball matches this season!” Due to the fact that ten of their wrestlers were snowed in over Thanksgiving Break, Sherman Indian only brought a total of four wrestlers. Out of those four matches Greg Rawson wrestled up from his normal weight class of (215lbs.) to compete at the (285lbs) weight class and won the first historic wrestling match in the schools history.

Pictures are available here:  http://blogs.smes.org/athletics/main.php?g2_itemId=3246

Other matches that were wrestled:
145lbs. Peter Barrett
160lbs. Taylor Bayles

Winter Season practice starts on November 20th. As many of you know practice occurs during the P.E. block, so each player will be expected to have all personal equipment (see below) the first day of practice.

We will again be competing in the Orange County Lacrosse Association youth league this winter. Games are scheduled every Saturday at Rancho Santa Margarita Middle School starting in January. There will be other venues to play at as the season moves along, (especially just before and during playoffs), but all games will be scheduled for Saturdays. Also, please be aware that there may be early morning practices for the 6th grade E block and the possibility of the 7th/8th grade G block going until 3:30 pm.

This season we will enter a 6th-7th-8th grade team in the Parochial Athletic League that is made up of those players who are inexperienced in the game or may need a season to play against players at the same level. PAL games will be played on Friday afternoons at various local competing school venues.
